How was iPodLinux originally ported to the Ipod?

I'm curious how the iPod was reverse engineered. Since Rockbox took so much of the code whole from that project, I didn't hear about the work involved. Does anyone have a link explaining how it was originally done?

I know this isn't the full story, but part of it was done by having the firmware dumped via the piezo. More information here

I saw that, which is what got me interested. However, they don't say how they were able to get the piezo code running without first getting access to the firmware.
