New HD for Archos Recorder
« on: March 02, 2007, 01:42:31 PM »
Hey,

I was just wondering if anyone could recommend a new hard drive for the Archos Recorder I have on the way.  I've found a few different brands that make 160 gig 2.5 inch hard drives and was wondering if anyone had any say on the different varients.  Also, can the Archos and Rockbox make use of the 8 mb cache of the drive?  Lastly, does anyone know of anything larger than 160 gigs is out there that works?  I saw a 200 gig but its an SATA so it won't work.

Thanks, Aaron

There is nothing larger than the 160 gig models.  I would search for power consumption benchmarks and factor that into your decision.  I, personally, have the Seagate model, however it was the only 160 gig drive of its type available at the time.

I actually wouldn't mind something much smaller, like 80GB if it had good power consumption and shock protection. It's hard to find quantitative information on those two figures...

I believe the largest drive you can use in the older Archos is 120 gig because it insists on FAT32.  I got a 120 gig drive for my V1 recorder and it's working great.

Also, get the slower 4200rpm drive because it consumes less power and you gain nothing with a faster drive.

Nope, you can use bigger although it is slightly awkward
