Ipod Nano. USB Connection problem
« on: March 02, 2007, 01:15:03 PM »
My Nano boots normally when not connected via USB. BUT... If Nano off, and I plug the USB in it looks like it is loading Rockbox ok, but then hangs with the word "LOADING" on screen, over the Rockbox boot screen.

I have to disconnect the USB, and let the Nano time out and turn itself off.

I can connect if I boot up the Nano first. However if a file is playing when the USB is connected the same as above occurs. I have to Stop the player before connecting the USB. I Have loaded several new versions of the software snce this started, but it makes no difference. Currently using 20070222

This all started after I tried (unsuccessfully) to charge the Nano via a mains charger, when it just hung. Before that it worked like a dream - could plug in when "off" and would just go straight to USB/charging mode.

Have I damaged what I think is called the bootloader? (The flashed part of the Ipod?) Is there any danger in reflashing the bootloader? If so, do I just follow the manual's instructions again as if this is a fresh unflashed Nano straight from the box? I would like to try this just to cover all possibilities but am not very sophisticated in these matters and am afraid I might do further damage.

All advice appreciated.

Rockbox does not modify anything in flash. The installation process does not flash anything, it just puts files in a hidden partition in the disk.

Also, please test if things still happen with the most recent build of Rockbox before reporting, yours is over a week out of date, there are new builds usually multiple times per day.

Thank you Llorean.  Para 2.2.1 of the Nano manual confused me by talking about the Ipod's flash memory.

So, can I assume then that if the latest build changes nothing, that I just proceed as I did when I first installed Rockbox?

Let's see if the new build fixes it first. The bootloader shouldn't be able to affect USB matters either way.

Help!  I loaded 20070305, removed the USB plug, Nano started to reboot.

After splashscreen, loading stuck with "Data abort at 0002FA3C" on screen.  Backlight on, not timing out.

Holding menu/select reboots the Nano, with same result.

Can insert docking plug during reboot - goes into USB/charge mode, so I reloaded the previous version of Rockbox (20070216).

Now it is working as before (ie  in my first post).

So - would it do any harm to reinstall the bootloader, and do I just follow the original process to do this?

I have been using build 070307 and I am getting the exact same problem as first500's first posting where it says "Loading" and just freezes there. The only way out is too re-boot without the USB plugged in, let it get into Rockbox and then plug in the USB cable. Has there been any changes since this build?
