Audio playable in both firmwares
« on: March 01, 2007, 06:27:08 PM »
Is there a way to have audio loaded on an iPod (5.5g) where it will play in both Apple's firmware, as well as Rockbox?

I'm using both at the moment, and would rather not have all 10gb loaded twice, one for each firmware.

(I'd like to apologize ahead of time if this is a tard/noob question, I've been reading for months and am now asking questions)

Rockbox is perfectly capable of playing music loaded for the Apple OS as long as it's not DRM protected (music from the music store, generally).

See the Database feature.

Yes, use the Database to have Rockbox find music loaded by iTunes.  See Chapter 4 of the manual..

Okay, yes... I guess I should have been more specific. I can browse to that, but the names are all funki-fied due to how iTunes loads the music.

Is this where the whole tag & rename programs (Foobar, MP3Tag, etc) come into play? If so - will they still be recognised by Apple's f/w?

I don't think you read the section of the manual I directed you to.

I am. I've followed the directions. Now, the difference is when I hit "Menu" from the Rockbox Main Menu, it brings me to an "Artis, Album, etc" listing, but whenever I click one, it says "Database is not ready".

Did you initialize the database? What steps, exactly, did you take?

Since last post, I've restarted the iPod. Now it only pulls up the 2 folders I've put straight on the iPod.

The steps I followed are just as they appear in Ch. 4:

General Settings>File View>Database

Load to RAM>Yes

Auto Update>On

Initialize Now

Update Now (which does not appear to do anything)

3rd time is a charm!

Maybe I missed a step before, or it didnt initialize or update....

In any case, its showing.

Thanks for the help! (and tolerating my ignorance)

I think the key when initializing is to "Feel the force Luke"  ... er excuse me, feel when the harddrive ceases activity.  (Just realized, this will be hard to do on Nano's and flash based DAPs.)  After the activity is done, Then reboot/power cycle.  Initialization should be completed.

Maybe choose a WPS with a harddrive activity indicator.  Keep a watch on that indicator and reboot when it no longer appears.
