ipod 5g issues
(1/1)
gsaathoff:
Hi All,
I just installed RB on my ipod video (30g) today, and it's great -- i was having lots of problems with the apple firmware, my ipod kept crashing and rebooting itself, and since i have no access to a windows machine (i'm pretty much linux only) i had no way of resetting the original firmware.
But, there are a few problems. The most significant of which is that it no longer works with my car charger (standard belkin cigarette lighter adapter + usb ipod cable). Also, while the ipod FAQ says that I can listen to music while charging via usb by holding down the "menu" button as I insert the usb cable, this doesn't work for me. When I plug my ipod into my laptop via usb, the ipod automatically switches to disk mode.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Also, is there a way to turn off the backlight? I'm thinking that would save some battery life. Backlight turns off OK in the default theme, but not in the one I'm using (Theme X High Bar). Is this a theme problem? Can I fix it without changing themes?
Thanks for your help.
Graham
Llorean:
To your car charger question: How do you know it's not charging. Have you tried extended use with it attached to the charger to see if the level rises or lowers? There may not be visual feedback for chargers right now.
To your second question: Are you holding Menu while Rockbox is already loaded and running? You should be in Rockbox already when you do this. (And further: Are you using an official build).
Number three can be solved by simply reading the manual and searching it for the options related to the backlight. We do require in the guidelines that you search the manual first.

Thanks for your help. I've resolved the backlight issue, and will experiment with my car charger to see if the battery is in fact charging. Also your suggestion about holding down the menu key after the system is fully booted appears to be working. I'm not getting any visual indication that my ipod is charging, but it does not automatically go into disk mode.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to include some visual indication that a device is charging in the next official release.
Best,
Graham
Llorean:
The iPod is unlikely to have an official release any time soon, and hasn't had one yet. But the intent is to add a visual indication, we were just surprised that it wasn't there when we thought it should be after changing some other things about how the charging worked.
