For Pokemon and other Gameboy games, you must own the original cartridge and a tool to dump ROM data from gameboy cartridges to legally obtain them.

For Pacman you'll need a means of dumping from an arcade machine that you have. The PluginPacbox wiki page contains information on which files you need and their checksums.

Rockboy is the gameboy emulator. It's included with Rockbox, and its usage is covered in the manual.

(I removed someone else's reply.)
Due to the nature of the post I removed I wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone:

There should be no discussion, encouragement, condoning, or even hinting at copyright infringement on the Rockbox forums.
This includes, but is not limited to asking for, or providing links to copyrighted movies, music, or ROMs.  (Unless, of course, you have explicit permission (as is granted in the Elephant's Dream case.))

Actually yes, you do need to own a pacman machine and extract the game data (roms) from that to be able to use it legally.
It's really quite complicated... I bet the procedure, when you get hold of a machine, to extract the rom from an actual pacman-machine is explained somewhere on the internet - google it?

Explanation; A viewer is nothing you open. A viewer has a/several filetype/s assigned to it so when you "play" a certain file the viewer is started. Like the mpegplayer - you just go to a .mpeg and press play with it selected.
With rockboy you'd go to a .gbc-file (or what ever) and press "play" which would result in rockboy starting executing that .gbc.

ok thank you. It would be realy nice if you could tell me where I can buy the pacman machine and other gameboy roms such as pokemon, and many others. Also is there another way of getting the pacman roms legally. For example can I buy it and download it legally.

There is no way to legally download them.

You have to own the physical games, the actual gameboy games for an actual gameboy, or an actual pacman arcade cabinet, and come up with a method for copying them off of it. That is the only legal solution.

So if you own the game, and you still download the file from the Internet, it is still Illegal? Because I bought pokemon games in the past, and I still have the cartridges.

According to US Copyright law, yes. I cannot speak for other countries. But we do not discuss where copyright materal can be downloaded from, period, here, unless that copyright material is specifically licensed by the creator for redistribution.

What I don't understand about that is: there are a ton of sites that distribute GBC ROMs, how come they aren't shut down?

Often they aren't located in the United States. Copyright Law in the US allows you specifically to make a backup, not acquire one from elsewhere. The wording is interpreted very strictly.

And with the DMCA, even that limited right to creating a backup is further restricted in the case of anything DRMed because at the moment it's illegal to circumvent said DRM even for creating a backup.

Regardless, we take copyright very seriously, as we as programmers and other creative persons here have copyrights of our own that we would like to be respected. Sites that redistribute copyright material without the author's given consent are not to be discussed here. Whether you think it's right or not, these are the forum rules.

;D ok so I found a couple of sites that let you download some game roms. And was wondering do all gb or gbc games work with rockbox.???? It is not illegal due to the reason that the author athuarised the distribution. Of course you will not find games such as super mario and pokemon there because that would be illegal. I will not post the site here due to fact that the mods might not like it. I just want to know if all or most gb or gbc games work on ipod.???, or it is just just mario and pokemon???                  Ok also lets assume  only   Mario and Pokemon works on ipod. And lets say I buy the gameboy game  of super mario. What do I do with it.    OOOOooo. And one more thing before I forget. I have doom on my ipod. I have doom1, doom 2,  orangee doom (or somethin like that), and freedoom. where can I get more wads.  Also there are several places where you can buy something called doom collectors edition.... I don't remenber the game but it contains all the doom wads...... and if there are other sites where I can obtain the wads for free legally it would be nice too.   Quake won't be bad either.      Thanks for everything.     Hope I'm not asking for way too many things.

So somenone [sic] Please tell me.
This will not get you anywhere here...

The forum guidelines require that you search for answers before asking and there have been many, many topics on Doom wads.

If you want to know what roms work, just try them, but AFAIK all gb roms will work and some gbc.

Any more posts like those above without asking for help for a specific problem and this thread will be locked.
