Releases?
« on: February 27, 2007, 03:11:20 PM »
How long were the Archos firmwares in development before they were released officially?
http://www.rockbox.org/download/

And how long are the iPods and others planned to be in development? Is there a target date or similar?

And is there a page with your aims with rockbox when it is released?

Thanks,

Danny

Theres this:

I think a lot of the 3.0 (and even 3.1) stuff is already done, so you could think of the current build as being 3.0 if you want  :)

There is no "how long are they planned to be in development."

We don't WANT it to take long for a port to reach release status, but until it's able to be considered bug free enough, it won't be 'released', and the iPod port is likely to be a long time coming unless the battery life issue is resolved.

Thanks,

So with the iPods its the battery life and the 80GB iPod problem are the main ones then now?

Well theres a lot of problems with the Ipods.  All sorts of stuff is slow, Dan_a is still preparing to commit the final COP patch, we don't yet understand all the different hardware on the chips, don't have proper USB support, etc.  Probably way more that I don't remember.

Though theres a lot of people working on PP platforms these days, so progress will probably start to be made on these issues little by little.

And the significant performance issues.
And the lack of a Rockbox-native USB mode (leaving a dependency on the retail firmware).

Remember, even the H100/H300 ports aren't considered release ready yet, though they're much closer (most of the problems that hold them back are affecting all targets, ie playback engine general issues.)

Out of curiosity, why does it matter so much whether it's been released?

I was just wondering if I should wait just for the iPod 80GB port or if I should wait for a release,
And another thing, I was wondering how fast the development of the firmware is. A mix of things.

Thanks for your help!  ;)

There is only one question you need to ask yourself, and it is the same question if Rockbox is "released" or not:

"Does this software do what I want it to do, in a manner I am able to live with?"

Yeah, I would like to have vorbis and themes on my iPod, although to an extent its minor.
It depends how bad the rockbox battery life if on the iPod (80GB) when it is working is if I can live with it or not.
I guess I'll have to see, if its 8 or more hours (preferably 10), that I could live with it till that issue is addressed, other than that, I would be living with the apple firmware until that is fixed.

I still haven't tried it so I'm looking forward to trying it!  ;)

You should get ten hours, depending on usage patterns.
