Installation/changing builds in Mac OSs
« on: March 05, 2007, 11:27:57 PM »
Now, as we all know, Mac computers do not show ".[whatever]" folders, as they are reserved for system stuff. So, sadly, I cannot install any builds, or new bootloaders. Is there a way to circumvent these OS restrictions? Please and thank you.

While it hides the folder, you should still be able to extract the archive directly to the device, so it should still be possible just by doing it that way.

Does that not work?

That restriction is also only for the GUI, so I think the standard unix command line should work fine.

Apparently there's a third party utility for OSX called Onyx which lets you toggle (amongst other things) the visibility of the . folders in the GUI.

Really, I'm not good at all with command lines or system or anything... The only codes I know are HTML and WPS, to an extent. So anything that's user-friendly would be wonderful, thanks.

You can't show hidden files on the Mac?  That's kind of crazy... boy, I'm glad I use Linux.  :)

Anyway, I suggest you take the time to learn a few of the basic UNIX commands.  Once you get a hang of the command line, I think you'll learn to see how it can make certain tasks much more simple.

Mike, learn the mv command and get used to terminal.
It can be very useful, for example, if you want to modify a file in the rockbox directory.
Its easier to type "open .rockbox" then to use oynx to show hidden directories.

Also rsync is the greatest way I found to transfer my music to my ipod.

Noah, you can, its just a pain. I use OS X quite a bit, and I still find it easy to just think of it as a pretty BSD with a horrible file manager.
