PNGs
Mr530:
Hey everybody,
I know that you can't use .png files in wps, but is there any way this will ever be possible? I know its been said before something about the technology limitations, but is there really that big of a difference?
And really I just want to use pngs for the transparency. It is such a pain if you wanted to do something such as change the background behind the battery icon. ugh it s headache.
Anyway, i was just wondering the actual truth?
Thanks,
Mr530
lachlan:
I believe the problem is that png's are compressed pictures, so rockbox will have to decode all the images that are displayed within the wps, as opposed to bmp. How much of a strain this places on the players resources I'm not sure, but I'm guessing it would be fairly significant.
bk:
Rockbox supports transparency in BMPs. Use RGB 255,0,255 for transparent areas.
There is no advantage to using PNG or other compressed image formats in Rockbox. Disk storage is abundant and the decoding process uses memory and CPU time that reduces battery life.
Mr530:
thanks, I will experiment later tonight.

Compression by itself is not an advantage, opacity would be though.
But then again, your arguments apply to that aswell - it costs memory and cpu to calculate opacity.
