Help installing Rockbox along with iPL Loader2 Boot Menu
« on: February 21, 2007, 05:50:18 PM »
I want to download the iPL Loader 2 bootloader on my 30gb video iPod, which that allows me to choose from the available operating systems through the visual menu when my iPod starts up.

I first read this tutorial on how to do that:
http://www.alwaysbeta.com/2006/08/24/how-to-dual-boot-your-ipod-with-rockbox/

But then I realized the ipod_fw.exe and ipodpatcher.exe links they provided were not working so I moved to the rock box site to see if they had that aswell, which they infact did, here:
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodInstallation

Well, I did everything they asked for in the Installation instructions, but when I was done installing the bootloader I realized they didn't have the iPL Loader2 Boot Menu part included in those instructions.

Can someone please help me add the iPL Loader2 Boot Menu like so: http://www.alwaysbeta.com/wp-content/uploads/smcbride/rockbox/ipod_1.jpg

I tried the instructions they have under Installing Rockbox along with iPL Loader2 Boot Menu , but it did not work, because it started up the same way, with a black screen with words saying rockbox is loaded, then a girl holding a black ipod from the jBuild, following the main menu with the playlists, etc.

Or maybe I could put everything they asked to extract from the command prompt back someway?

This pic shows everything that was taken out through the command prompt in to seperate bins:

is there any way for me to possibly place all those bin files back to my iPod and re-do the process of installing iPL Loader 2 bootloader with Always Beta's (http://www.alwaysbeta.com...t-your-ipod-with-rockbox/) instructions?

Since the IPL bootloader is made by Ipodlinux, you'll probably find more help there..
After you've successfully installed the loader, just dump your rockbox files into the root of your ipod - it will detect them automaticly!

I tried those instructions from the link you gave, but I still am getting errors:

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f69/ivetl/error.jpg
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f69/ivetl/error2.jpg
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f69/ivetl/error3.jpg

I don't think I can repeat the process because in those instruction it uses the command prompt to extract the bin files. But since I already extracted the bin files, my first time incorrectly trying to install the iPL Loader Boot Menu, there is nothing left to extract, so I get these errors.

Any one have any idead how to fix this? Please help, I really want the loader boot menu, but i still get the rockbox boot menu.

Are you logged in as Administrator?  ipodpatcher requires admin privileges in order to access your ipod's hard disk.

Yes, I am logged in as admin.

Does anyone know any way for me to put everything that was taken out of my ipod back so i can re-do the process (put everything back shown in the following link picture):

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f69/ivetl/pic.jpg

If I am able to put everything back to the iPod, can I do it over following the correct instruction? Please help.

The instructions you're using are based on an old version of ipodpatcher.  You can download the latest version of ipodpatcher from here:

download.rockbox.org/bootloader/ipod/ipodpatcher/win32/ipodpatcher.exe

Copy it into the same directory as loader.bin, and then type:

Code: [Select]
ipodpatcher -ab loader.bin

ipodpatcher should search for your ipod, find it, and then installer loader.bin - you don't need to use anything else.

I downloaded the lastest version of the ipodpatcher, copied it into the same directory as loader.bin then i ran the ipodpatcher it searched for my iPod and asked if i wanted to run the rockbox bootloader (y/n). I typed y, and it said successfully installed the bootloader.

But I want to have the iPL Loader 2 Boot Menu like so:
http://www.alwaysbeta.com/wp-content/uploads/smcbride/rockbox/ipod_1.jpg

So I can run both the apple and rockbox firmware. But right now I just have the rockbox bootloader menu.

Don't just run ipodpatcher, run it with the command "ipodpatcher -ab loader.bin"

you could try using the official installer on the ipodlinux page. this would install ipodlinux and loader 2.4 if you check the box to install that. but your iPod needs to be running an Apple Firmware older than Sept. 12, 2006.

if you have newer firmware you could also try this link posted hear. http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=15153
this will not install ipodlinux and it will only install rockbox and ipodlinux bootloader 2.4.

if this method doesn't work you could also try this instlaller http://miche.aqua-gero.com/

Don't just run ipodpatcher, run it with the command "ipodpatcher -ab loader.bin"

linuxstb, can you please tell me exactly how to "run it with the command "ipodpatcher -ab loader.bin" "?

For instance I have saved the lastest version of the ipodpatcher to a folder under my c: drive called rockbox.

I click the ipodpatcher application and it asks run or cancel i click run. Then it searchs for my ipod, and the follows by asking "Do you wish to install the rockbox bootloader? (y/n). I can ONLY type y or n.

Where in there do i type the command "ipodpatcher -ab loader.bin"? Because if i type anything other then y or n it automatically closes the command prompt.

You run it from the command prompt - in the same way you were running commands from the command prompt in the screenshots you posted.

Thank you so much for all your help linuxstb!! I finally got it to work. But now I have another problem. When I try to play my music, it does not work, now. The screen comes on with all the music's information but it does not play, even if I click play/pause. It just stays at 0:00

Anyone have any idea why? I could use help, I dont know what could have caused this. Before the iPL Loader2 Boot Menu Installation, everything was playing fine, but now..?  ???
