I see that the question has been asked before and it appears that this feature may be available in other builds, but from my searching of the manual all I find for playback speed is that the pitch can be modified:
Pitch
The Pitch Screen allows you to change the pitch and (at the same time) the playback
speed of your player. The pitch value can be adjusted between 50% and 200%. 50%
means half the normal playback speed and the pitch that’s an octave lower than the
normal pitch. 200% means double playback speed and the pitch that’s an octave higher
than the normal pitch. It’s not possible to change the pitch without changing the playback
speed and vice versa. Changing the pitch can be done in two modes: procentual
and semitone. Initially (after the player is switched on), procentual mode is active.

This is not what I had in mind...  I am looking for something like what Windows Media Player does.  It's actual aim is to change the speed not the pitch.  For my usage, increasing the pitch as a means to change the speed is really not helpful.

Am I missing something?

Llorean:
No, the only way to change the playback speed currently is by way of pitch.

Which technically IS adjusting the playback speed. What you want is an increase in playback speed with an equivalent decrease in pitch so that the perceived pitch is that of the original file.

is that how WMP does it?  It seems that it clips out parts of the playback rather than playing at a faster sample rate.  I am not sure if I'm using these terms correctly, but I know that there is a difference b/w WMP and rockbox.
