ok, so what i am missing or what have i screwed up ?
markun:
- your GBSYSTEM folder shouldn't be in another GBSYSTEM folder, but in the root of your player!
- you didn't install the bootloader: FWIMG01.DAT
Why don't you remove everything (no need to format), unzip the CONTENT of GBSYSTEM.ZIP to your Gigabeat (so don't unzip it to "GBSYSTEM" as that will create a new directory and put everything in there) and copy the bootloader (FWIMG01.DAT) to the GBSYSTEM\FWIMG folder
If X: is your Gigabeat the bootloader should be located at X:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG\FWIMG01.DAT
After installing the bootloader you need to unzip rockbox.zip and rockbox-fonts.zip to your Gigabeat as well (again, the content, don't create 2 dirs called rockbox and rockbox-zip). For the first file go to the 'current build' section, for the second you go to 'extra'. Both onder 'download' at the top of this page on the left side.
If you still can't do it, either get help from a friend or just give up...

Okay - there's a little inconsistency in what you've written, but I'm going to put those down to typos on your part (i.e. you've written "gb system" in one place, and "gbsystem" in another - those are different folder names, but I assume you didn't mean to put the space in the first one).
So from what you've said, you've got this layout :
--- Code: -----
|-GBSYSTEM
| |-GBSYSTEM
| | |-FONTS
| | | |-FNTZH.DAT
| | | |-FNTZT24.DAT
| | | |-FNTZT.DAT
| | | |-FNTJA.DAT
| | |-FWIMG
| | | |-FWIMG00.DAT
| | | |-FWIMG02.DAT
| |-readme.txt
|-bootsplash
|-bootsplash.raw
|-FWIMG01.DAT.ORIG
--- End code ---
There are a couple of things I'm not clear on though - like where your FWIMG01.DAT.ORIG has come from. On a "normal" gigabeat install, this should be the FWIMG01.DAT that arrived on the player from Toshiba, but you've stated twice now that you formatted the player before attempting to install Rockbox - so there wasn't an original firmware. So where did that one come from ?
Leaving that aside from now - your folder layout is wrong.
There should be only one GBSYSTEM folder, and you have two. So take the contents of the second one (the one with FONTS and FWIMG in it) and move those back up into the first one.
Next, take the rockbox bootloader file that you downloaded (the FWIMG01.DAT file) and put that into the FWIMG folder along with the FWIMG00.DAT and FWIMG02.DAT files you already have there.
You also now seem to have removed the .rockbox folder and the rockbox.gigabeat file you told us you had earlier. Please put those back exactly where you had them before.
Nate!:
I think I know what happened. In reading your post I noticed that you have the GBSYSTEM folder inside another GBSYSTEM folder with a readme.txt.
In my instructions, if you'll remember, I said unzip the GBSYSTEM.zip file onto your pc. The reason for this is because, inside that zip file is ANOTHER zip file that contains the Folder you actually need to extract.
So, save the GBSYSTEM.zip file from the Wiki to C:\temp. When you extract it you will have a C:\temp\GBSYSTEM folder. Inside that folder you will have another GBSYSTEM.zip and txt file. Extract THAT zip file, ie. C:\temp\GBSYSTEM\GBSYSTEM.zip, onto your Gigabeat's root. (K:\) Once you do this, then you can continue with the install instructions.
Download the bootloader.zip from the bottom of the Wiki. Extract IT onto the root of your Gigabeat. Doing so will automagically put FWIMG01.DAT in the K:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG directory.
Download the latest build. Extract IT to the root of your Gigabeat. Now you should have the .rockbox folder, rockbox.gigabeat, and bootsplash.raw files in the root of your Gigabeat.
If you do this correctly, your Gigabeat's file structure SHOULD look like this:
(K:\) being the root of your Gigabeat. It may be a different letter on your PC.
K:\
* K:\GBSYSTEM\
* K:\GBSYSTEM\FONTS\
* K:\GBSYSTEM\FONTS\FNTJA.DAT -> This and the next 3 are files.
* K:\GBSYSTEM\FONTS\FNTZH.DAT
* K:\GBSYSTEM\FONTS\FNTZT24.DAT
* K:\GBSYSTEM\FONTS\FNTZT.DAT
* K:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG\
* K:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG\FWIMG00.DAT -> This and the next 2 are files.
* K:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG\FWIMG01.DAT
* K:\GBSYSTEM\FWIMG\FWIMG02.DAT
* K:\.rockbox\
* K:\bootsplah.raw -> This is and the next 2 are files.
* K:\rockbox.gigabeat
* K:\gigabeat.conf

once again, thank you for your continued patience. i will try this and if i still cant get it to work then i am going to walk out on my deck and throw the damn thing into the canyon, because a) i am too dense to use it and b) i have spent so much of my time (and all of yours) on it that i could just go buy an ipod like my wife has and not have any of this headache lol.
cant believe i redid the whole thing and didnt even notice i no longer had the two rockbox files on it lol
