A "General" Question.
« on: February 20, 2007, 07:45:39 PM »
*sigh* Another clueless noob joins your ranks.

Alas, I am thinking of selling my Ipod photo and getting a gigaBeat. I am just wondering if the Rockbox program allows you to do the same thing on both platforms, as I am not entierly sure of the programs full functionality yet.

(Disclaimer: I don't own a gigabeat.  I do however own an iPod)

In general, Rockbox is Rockbox.

In specific, This comparison chart may help.  Typically, I think Gigabeat's got more than iPod so you should be trading up.

The iPod can record, the Gigabeat can not.
The iPod should have a wider selection of replacement batteries, and be cheaper to repair if you would consider that of value.  It will also be easier to find cases and accessories for the iPod.

The Gigabeat will be much faster than the iPod, will have better runtime, and has a functioning remote.

Much appreciated. Also- Im guessing that the Ipod photo can not play games. Correct? Also- Is it possible to put am emulator like VBA and rom files on  a gigaBeat with Rockbox?

Why are you guessing that?

All rockbox plugins work across all rockbox platforms with a very few exceptions.

As for VBA - well no - there's no such thing for Rockbox - the GBA will be tricky to emulate on most of our targets what with their limited processing power. We do however have Rockboy, which plays original Gameboy and Gameboy Color roms.

I guessed because I did not see games on the comparison chart that was provided above for the Ipod.

Well, thanks for everything!

That would probably be because, in the eyes of the developers at least (and not a few of the users either) Rockbox isn't really about being able to play games on your player (although you can) it's more about being the best audio playing firmware you can get for your DAP of choice.
