Locating iPod_Control to control playlists (w/ pics)
« on: February 20, 2007, 04:36:45 PM »
I would like to manually add my music to my 30gb video iPod, rather than having it play music from the hidden iPod_control folder shown in their id3 tags when played in the iPod.

I am having trouble trying to find where to locate this hidden iPod_control folder. Here is a picture of where my iPod is located:

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f69/ivetl/step1.jpg

If I wanted to add music, is it alright if i do so manually by dragging and dropping folders organized like this: artist-->album-->track into the playlist folder shown here:

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f69/ivetl/step1-2.jpg

Would the music I have already in the hidden iPod_control folder still be there aswell? Maybe like each song would be doubled (iPod_control folder music + music that was dragged and dropped to the playlists folder manually)?

I also tried to follow this tutorial:
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/ConvertiTunesDBtoTagCache
with no luck following the windows instructions.

I could not find where to locate the iTunesDB file (Z:\iPod_Control\iTunes\iTunesDB if your iPod is drive Z).

because i cant find where iPod_control is.  Can please help me with this?

Hello again Ivet, your ipod_control folder is a hidden folder, if you want to see it select
tools->folder options and click the radio button "show hidden files and folders" under the view tab.

Yes you can drag and drop music onto your ipod and put it anywhere you want, that's the point with rockbox. Once you find your files in the ipod_control folder (amongst many other folders name F00 etc) you'll see that they're name ABD.mp3 etc.
I would recommend just deleting your ipod_control folder, (or just the ipod_control\music folder) transfering your songs by drag and drop, and then initializing your rockbox database.

I'm gonna sound like such a dummy, but where do I find the "tools" button to select that you mentioned.

He's talking about Windows Explorer (that's the file explorer, not Internet Explorer :) )

Oh, okay got it, thanks Bascule!

Now if I do the drag and drop and DONT delete the iPod_control folder would it still show the iPod_control folder music once rockbox starts or would it instead show my own manually placed music in its place.

And if I do decide to delete the ipod_control\music folder would the music still be playable in the regular apple firmware, or would it be completely gone?

The music will still be there in iPod_control, so the Rockbox Database will still index it, if you use the Database.
If you navigate by file tree / directory structure the music will still be there as well.

Apple Firmware will only see the music if it was placed in iPod_Control by a program capable of writing to the Apple Firmware's database.  Rockbox can not write to this database.
iTunes, Anapod, elphpod, sharepod, yamipod, etc. can.
