iPod 5th gen: apple firmware update ---> dead?
« on: February 20, 2007, 11:22:53 AM »
hey guys I hope you can help, as I've completely given up trying.

First of all I just want you to know that I am not a newb in linux/rockbox/whatever and that I've read all the routine steps for ipod revival and they were of no use to me.

After having installed the rockbox firmware and being quite happy with it for some weeks, I was prompted by iTunes for a firmware patch. After having patched my iPod (whose battery was near-end by the way) it didn't show anything but a black screen. I let the battery drain to its end, as the drive was spinning all the time.
Later i plugged it into an usb port and waited for it to charge. The iPod went on instantly with the same dark screen.
I tried a hard-reboot (menu+select) and it restarted as well(you could see the screen flash). But bringing it into disk-mode was impossible no matter how hard I tried.

What I was thinking about is that it is the rockbox bootloader which is in conflict with the apple firmware loader (MBR), as I'm quite certain that the iPod bios can't be flashed in any way, so there should be a possibility to restore.

So here I am, a poor student :) with his broken iPod not being able to connect over usb and only able to restart.

The Rockbox bootloader is removed by the Apple update process, since the Firmware Partition is completely rewritten.

Interestingly enough, iPods are flashable, it's just that we never do it. On the other hand Apple does, so it's entirely possible that their flash went wrong during your update, as one of the possibilities. Either way, no Rockbox software should be on your iPod in the firmware partition (the rockbox.ipod file and .rockbox folder should still be on the disk, but nothing should try to access them during the boot process).

Honestly, it might be something to bring up with Apple.
