help!! h120 hd broken!
« on: February 15, 2007, 10:09:00 AM »
hi,
I am scared to death (almost...) my iriver h120 seems to be broken -  when I startup it takes for ever until finally showing "ata error: -1  insert usb cable and press a button"
unfortunately I then cannot go into usb mode...the red light stays on all the time, and it doesn't show up on my pc.

I still have warrenty, but it is obvious that rockbox is installed because the bootloader  starts...but how do i erase rockbox without being able to enter usb mode???

any suggestions on what I can do???

help!!

thank you, ph

I had tried that of course...
it just tries to boot for a long time then shows the same thing...

in iriver firmware it will say check HDD connection underneith the startuplogo and then finally go into normal mode,  I can even navigat to the setup stuff, but as soon as i try to access the root it will show me some chinese signs and freeze

I tried to format the disc while in iriver firmware, but it says "cant format" eventually

does anyone of the european users out there know if we have 12 or 24 months of warrenty (I thought it was generally 12 for electronics...) but it says 12 on the iriver homepage...

what do I do without warrenty?

can I buy a harddisc and put it in myself?

is there a guide how to do this somewhere on the rockbox page?

I can't imagine life without my h120 (I use it all the time as I am a musician - rec, database, listening...)

I had the exact same error message.  Just this week I received my new hard disk and replaced it.  Works like a champ again.  The process is simple and only requires a #5 torx wrench which can be purchased for less than $3.  I got the hard drive for $60 from Computer Giants.  Here's illustrated guide to the replacement

http://www.pdainternalbattery.com/iriverinstall.html

Once the new HD is in you need to format it.  Instructions here

http://www.misticriver.net/wiki/index.php/H1xx_Hard_Drive_Replacement

Two cautions;  1) the screws are VERY small, be careful not to drop one into the headphone jack or similar 2) don''t attempt the replacement after drinking a grande double expresso

From Tapers Section;
[440] Is it possible to upgrade or replace the H1xx hard drive?

Much of the following hdd replacement info has been lifted from NPSwimDude500’s FAQ over at misticriver (http://www.misticriver.net/showthread.php?p=330700#post330700)

H120: uses a single platter 1.8" 20 gigabyte hard drive manufactured by Toshiba. The model name on these drives may read MK2004GAL or MK2006GAL (the 4 and 6 designate model years, and there is no known difference other than the number). Toshiba currently manufactures two other single-platter drives with the same dimensions, the 30 gigabyte MK3006GAL drive and the 40 gigabyte MK4007GAL drive which uses new PMR technology (note: it has not been officially released yet). 120s can both be fitted with these drives without modification.

H140: uses Toshiba's 1.8" double platter 40 gigabyte MK4004GAH/MK4006GAH hard drive (once again, the 4 and 6 only designate model years). It can be replaced by the double platter MK6006GAH or Toshiba's new dual platter 1.8" 80GB drive, the MK8007GAH, which also uses PMR technology. The 140 can only be upgraded to these drives without modification. You can also, of course, replace an MK4004GAH/MK4006GAH with another MK4004GAH/MK4006GAH.

@ dr.pheel
You do not want the ZIF type drive they have a VERY different connector to the one in your player and will not fit.

As for European suppliers there is span.com
http://www.span.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=23_504_1801
They're here in the UK, but that's nearly Europe ;-)

I have not dealt with them, I keep an eye on them for when one of my H320/H120 drives fills or fails, which hasn't happened yet.

For an H120 it is important that you get a single platter disc, you can tell from the description or by checking the height - 5mm (8mm drives are for the H140 which has a deeper case)

Span don't even have any of the 30Gb or 40Gb drives with the right interface in stock right now - they are listed though -  but there is lots of information on there - in English, and I'm sure that there are other suppliers in Europe but as mentioned I've not had the need to do the upgrade yet.

No, it won't. The ZIF drive has a different connector. Go for the MK3006GAL, ot the MK4007GAL.

Also one thing to try before ordering a new harddrive is to simply reseat the current drive, disconnect it and then reconect it, it might have been knocked one time too many and the connection might have become loose...

My H120 started having the same problems one week ago today. I bought it off ebay about 3 months ago, and it had worked perfectly until I was in a meeting and the unit would not record. Under different circumstances, different things were displayed, but principally:

ATA error: -1
Check HDD Connection

Windows would not see the disk under any circumstances. I entertained the idea of ordering a USB enclosure for the HD to test it outside of the H120 to see if the problem was with the H120 and not the HD, but instead took the gamble of ordering a new MK3006GAL from eWiz.com in San Jose, CA. They had the best price (THROUGH www.pricewatch.com, where the link brings up zero shipping charges), and the drive shipped first day and got to me the next.

My H120's working again and has 50% more capacity. I'm new to Rockbox and although I reinstalled, I've lost my Rockbox settings and now wish I'd backed up the Rockbox stuff on the H120, because I don't know how to get the WPS looking like I had it -- a minor problem, certainly.
