unable to boot original apple firmware
« on: February 11, 2007, 07:45:56 PM »
i successfully installed rockbox on my 4g but i cannot get back into the apple firmware.
I tried turning hold on when i see the apple during reboot (or when turning it on), and it gets to the "loading original firmware" line. i then turn the hold function off.  but then seems to reboot itself right back into rockbox.

i read the "foolproof" thread and began following the instructions but the usb format program did not seem to work for me. i could only hit the start button and it would forever say "checking device".

for now, i was able to remove the rockbox.ipod file from the ipod and kept it on my pc's harddrive. the rockbox folder is still in the ipod. i also ran the command to stop the bootloader from starting rockbox. for now ill keep using the apple firmware until i get help to solve this problem.

all you have to do to install it on your ipod is extract the .zip file to the root of your ipod that you can find at this link below.

Er... fugot... do you read his post carefully? ;)

It seems that rockbox has a bug. And yes, the bootloader has some problems... http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=8686.0

I hope they can resolve it soon. :-[

You're right, at the moment there is no solution for this problem. You are not the only one who has this bug, never fear. ;)

My iPod mini can't boot the original firmware, too. :(
It's a new bug in rockbox, we have to wait...

Wrong!
The problem is entirely with the new install instructions.
On top of that, it appears that the Manual has the proper instructions, but links you to the wrong (newer) tool, causing the problem as well.
Follow the instructions to restore your Apple boot partition, then follow the old directions in the Wiki, under IpodPort.
Note:
Make sure you don't use the instructions in IpodInstallationBeta if you have a 4G grey / mini.

You should use this (old) instruction to install bootloader onto your G4:
http://www.rockbox.org/tw...me?topic=IpodInstallation
and note, that with the old bootloader, you have to press Menu instead of Hold, to boot into apple-firmware.

I'm not sure what these last two posts are about but they seem to be taking something rather out of context.  This problem is resolved and no further discussion will help this topic.  Those wishing to install Rockbox should consult the manual.
