Recording on H320 with external microphone
« on: February 04, 2007, 06:20:06 AM »
Hello everybody,

I intend to buy a iriver H320 and want to record with an external dynamic microphone (Sennheiser MD441). Is it possible to make good quality recordings on the H320 without using a pre-amplifier for this mic?

If you want good quality recordings you will have to use a pre-amplifier.
Though it is true that both H300 and H100 units have extraordinary recording capabilities for their price range and considering that they weren't meant to be recording devices.

I am quite happy with my recordings even without a pre-amilifier (Sony ECM MS907), though I am not sure what exactly you mean "good quality". Remember that these devices are not professional gear.

I'd say it depends on the things you want to record. For rock concerts and loud environments, you'd need at least a battery box. For very quiet recordings you need a pre-amp because you'll hear the ADC in the iriver gets noisy above 15dB (or even below that).

For everything else, just try it plugged like that, the iriver provides around 3.7V on the plug, most mics are happy with that.

Tim,
For open air concerts I had very good quality recordings using cheap good Panasonic powered capsules from Microsound ( http://stores.ebay.com/MICROSOUND-INC ) on my H140.
I also recorded some rock band rehearsals and they get a very good dynamic & EQ response.

Give them a try and then start upping the quality ladder :-)
Good luck, Wolf.

Hi @ all,

thanks a lot for your answers! I want to use it to record interviews for a local radio station. So I will try now to get a cheap one at Ebay.
