My mac doesn't see my 5g 60gig video ipod now.

I'll admit I messed up when I tried to put all the stuff on the ipod (5g video 60 gig).  I followed the instructions on this site but missed uploading the .rockbox folder.  Now, for some reason, my powerbook doesn't see the ipod when it is plugged into the usb port.  I've even tried doing it in disk mode and original OS, it just doesn't see it.  As soon as I start up disk mode it says that it's ok to unplug the player before it's even plugged into the usb port.

I tried looking through the forums for a similar problem, but it seems starting in disk mode fixed all the similar problems I've seen.  Any help you guys could provide would be greatly appreciated.

The "Okay to disconnect" message in disk mode is normal if you do it without the cable plugged in - that's what my iPod tells me anyway.

So did you actually plug it in to your Mac after that, or did you just assume it wasn't working ?

If you did, and it's still not being picked up - then I have to assume your Mac doesn't like trying to mount FAT32 (winpod) formatted iPods automatically, in which case you'll have to do it manually.

Do you actually plug it in and wait, or do you assume the "Okay to disconnect" screen means it won't work? Plugging it in should still work fine.

We can't actually affect what happens in the true Disk Mode in any way (you get to it before any of our code has run) so if it's not working, that suggests a problem on your computer's side. My understanding is that MacOS takes quite some time to recognize Fat32 drives, so you might want to just plug it in and wait a bit.

There have been some odd reports recently about broken USB behaviour - probably caused by the change to how Rockbox distiguishes between a USB connection to a computer and a USB connection to a wall charger.  Rockbox now does some USB initialisation which may be confusing your Mac.

I experienced a similar problem on my iBook yesterday - the ipod never entered disk mode, even in the Apple firmware.  Rebooting my iBook fixed it.

I haven't investigated fully yet, but I hope to over the weekend.   Can you try and see if you can reliably recreate the problem, or if it's more random?

If it does seem to be a "reliable" bug, then I would suggest always starting the Apple firmware before attaching your ipod to your Mac.

Sorry I wasn't more clear.  I've plugged it into the computer in disk mode, regular OS mode, with rockbox running, and while on and off.  Nothing is happening other than the screen lights up to show it's getting power, and if off, rockbox will boot up.

Another thing I just noticed before I took off to work.  After I plugged in my ipod the usb port doesn't want to see anything after that, external hard drive is what I tested it with.  Once I get home, I'll power cycle the laptop and see if that fixes anything.

Because of this, I have yet to actually be able to install the .rockbox folder (so for the moment the ipod is just a paperweight).  I'm starting to wonder if its some sort of bug in the ipod itself that disables the usb port on the computer after it is ejected.

I admit I'm not the most computer literate person in the world, so I really do appreciate your effort in helping me.

This is almost certainly a recently introduced bug in Rockbox.

I've just tested again, and after I connect my ipod running Rockbox to my iBook, my iBook will never see it again....

So for now, make sure you're running the Apple firmware before connecting.
