5.5g "Installation Incomplete" 30gb Error
« on: February 06, 2007, 04:30:29 PM »
Hi everybody, I have a 5.5g ipod running apple OS and iPL, and I want to use rockbox through loader 2.5d6 (i think that's what it is), and the problem is I always get an installation incomplete error or no .rockbox directory. I have used rockbox many times even on this ipod, but just never with the loader2

I know its not supported, but it should be possible and it was such an incredible pain to install linux that I would rather use loader2 than the rockbox loader.

Any help is appreciated,
-Mr530

I've heard reports of this before, only with Loader2. This suggests that the problem lies with the fact that you're using Loader2, and may be a partitioning issue or something else.

Both rockbox.ipod and the .rockbox folder need to be on your FAT32 partition.  The "installation incomplete" message means the .rockbox folder is missing.

Maybe you've put them on your Linux (ext2) partition, in which case it won't work.

well, I've put both in my fat32 partiton (the only one I can access while still in windows) and what happens is it boots and I get the installation incomplete error.

I really want to try some new wps i've made.

Is the Fat32 partition set as primary?

When Rockbox boots, after the error message, do you see your .rockbox folder? Hold Menu and make sure it's set to "All Files" not "Supported"

doesn't do anything to hold menu. When I went under setting manually and click "show all" it says "Save faild? No Partition"

How would I check to see if fat32 partition is primary, and would this affect linux?

Have you used zacaj's awesome tutorial to install iPodLinux?

I think that is because  the fdisk instructions in this (still awesome) tutorial are rubbish. Repartition your iPod as described here: http://www.ipodlinux.org/5.5G

Edit: Scratch that.. linuxstb just told me that RockBox mounts the first FAT partition it sees in the partition table.  And your FAT partition is primary too.
Nevermind then ;-)

And btw: I'm able to load RockBox with Loader2 on my 3G 40GB iPod.

so is it unfixable then...?

I feel like there is a lot of bashing between rockbox and ipodlinux, but I must say that the new iBoy is 10x better than rockboy.

However I want rockbox for my music, I love the customizable and fast UI.

Out of curiosity, where do you get the impression we bash iPodLinux?

not that rockbox bashed IPL but that some members at the IPL forums bashed rockbox.

I asked in the tutorial thread over there if anybody had successfuly installed rockbox using the tutorial and everybody told  me to come here and how they didnt' like rockbox. Personally I think that the applications in IPL are great, but the UI is straight garbage (too slow, not customizable enough, and lack of music support). That is only for the 5g ipods though, IPL was great on my 4G.

Still nobody can help me...? I NEED rockbox  ;D

You shouldn't give anything about 50% of the users that posted in this topic.

You never got around to telling us if your FAT32 partition is set as primary. Clearly Rockbox can't see the partition, so it seems unlikely that you've got it set up properly. I'm not sure what the best way to go about this in windows would be though.

I can run Linux (slax) in vmware no problem, but would this require me to erase partitions?
