Ipod video 30 gig 5 gen problem
« on: February 06, 2007, 03:17:00 PM »
well I went through  the manual. I put my file to rockbox etc.
went to cmd,
went cd \rockbox,
got that up good.put the ipodpatcher --scan goes well.
I then do the back up of the ipod (ipodpatcher 5 -r bootpartition.bin
then ipodpatcher 5 -a bootloader-ipodvideo.ipod

I disconnect my ipod, show up with this message:

Rockbox bootloader
version: 20r12194-070204
IPOD version: 0xFFFFFFFFF
Toshiba mk3008GAL
partitition 1: 0xoB 28537 MB
Loading Rockbox...
Error!
Can't load rockbox.ipod:
File not found
press menu+select to reboot
then select+play for disk mode

what is happening? I thought I put in the proper file?

Error!
Can't load rockbox.ipod:
File not found

You need to extract your downloaded build (it will be a .zip file) to the root (first/primary directory) of your iPod's hard drive.  The .zip file contains a folder named ".rockbox" and a file named "rockbox.ipod"

The bootloader is telling you that it can not find the file named rockbox.ipod on your iPod's hard drive.

Double check that you properly extracted all the contents of the .zip file.

ok just to get this straight I should have exactly 4 files on my rockbox folder in my c drive correct?

1. rockbox.ipod
2..rockbox (folder)
3.ipodpatcher
4.bootloader-ipodvideo.ipod

I do use winrar also.

by .zip you mean by the use of winrar? wait... I only downloaded the 2 files needed that are in the manual correct. ok well im going to look for a file "unzipper" so I know to do what is correct.
A - I assume you are on Windows and have the "Tools-->Folder Options-->View" box ticked next to "Hide file extensions of known file types."  I also assume you have WinRAR installed and it has associated itself with .zip files so all you are seeing is the file name and the WinRAR icon.
B - The name of the file that needs extracted to your iPod's hard drive is "rockbox.zip" (if you follow the manual's link to "current") or "rockbox-ipodvideo.zip (if you followed the manual's link to "daily") - It is a .zip style archive and WinRAR can extract it fine.
C - What are the names of the two files the manual told you to download?  The manual tells you to download three (ipodpatcher.exe - bootloader-ipodvideo.ipod - the firmware .zip) files, and strongly suggests you download a fourth (fonts).
D - I suspect you skipped step 2.2.2 and went straight to 2.2.3.

Looks more to me like you extracted the .zip file onto your PC's harddrive : "on my rockbox folder in my c drive".

That's where you download the files to from www.rockbox.org - not where you extract the .zip file too. The zip file must be extracted to the iPod drive.

For others that may be looking at this, I had a similar issue.  Some versions of the daily builds don't have a rockbox.ipod file, so when I downloaded the latest build for my nano I was missing it.   I don't know if there is a better way, but I went back through the previous builds and found the latest one with a rockbox.ipod file and used that.

Why not just download the actual current build, instead?
