Once again... Bookmark feature in text viewer
« on: February 03, 2007, 06:10:09 AM »
Hello,

I've been here about a year ago with this problem. In the meantime, that feature has been reinserted into the build (or so I was told).
A few days ago, I had a compatibility problem, so I downloaded a brandnew firmware version and of course I tried it right away. It seemed to work fine as long as I left the iriver on.
<> However, after I had powered off and I powered on the next day or so, bookmarks were gone!
I've searched the forum, but either no one else seems to be using the iriver for reading ebooks or no one else has this problem which is odd... For me, the ebook-viewer is one of the really cool features of the iriver. Photos are fantastic, but you don't go viewing photos every day and I can only listen to music for so long. I don't do a lot of playing on whatever platform which leaves reading as the thing I do very often - because of the small screen, I read only very short paragraphs at a time of course, which is why I really regret the bookmark isn't working.
I still have the old config-files with the bookmark, but the new firmware has much larger config files for the viewers, so I assume they won't fit.
What I do about ebooks is this: I open them with NAVI and after reading, I close them with the STOP button. I don't press << which of course would always take me to the beginning.
Somebody here got an idea? Anyone?
Thanks a lot!
Greetings,

I agree that the text viewer needs better bookmarking.  I read books from gutenberg on the subway a lot.  Correction, book, singular.  Open any other text file and you lose your place.  Multiple unique bookmarks are a good thing.

An option to disable jump to start/end would be nice.  But not a priority, its easy enough to remove the button mappings in a custom build.

Very hard feature (from what little I understand of the architecture) would be a second font for the reader/editor.

Man you read gutenburg books too.  So do i.  It always frustrates me when i have to determine where i was by counting pixels on the scrollbar.

@ axlgreasetires

You have a scrollbar? I don't - but I guess that can be activated and deactivated somehow.
"I read Gutenberg books" is not really accurate in my case - I would do so a lot if the bookmark feature worked, but as it doesn't, I don't because by the time I'd have found the part where I had left the ebook, my break would be over. As you say - and I've just tried it - that the bookmarks work if you have only one file, I can live with that for a while.
However, I'm just learning Georgian and I'd like to be able to make *.txt files with my own vocabulary and grammar rules and stuff and view them on the iriver without losing the bookmark in my "leisure reading" book.

Okay, I'm not quite sure what you wanted to tell us by posting these links, but as I can't see that particular bug in the list, I'll register and submit it - I hope that's okay as I'm no pro and I don't think I could be of any help coding this.
In the meantime, I might just try to update the two old config files I have to make them compatible to the new build.

Greetings,

Hi axlgreasetires,

I got an email today from one of the developers on Flyspray stating that the task I had put there had been closed as fixed. I guess that means that it's been put in the official build, so if you download a new firmware version now, it should be fine actually...
I'm gonna have a look on Flyspray and ask him about this specifically, but I guess that's what it means - things that seem to be working just fine always appear somewhat suspicious to me...
