4g greyscale installation problem
« on: January 31, 2007, 10:00:55 AM »
Ok... so I do everything that the manual says to do but the ipod did not restart and open as rockbox as it is supposed to do... it just stays in apple firmware format... everything seemed to be going fine while installing... any suggestions?
My only thought is that maybe I didn't expand the folders to the ipod correctly?

Other thing I get is messages on the command prompt that it doesn't recognize commands such as "--scan" or "-a"

Then you're using the wrong version of ipodpatcher - where did you download it from? And which instructions are you following?

If you get an error message like that, the installation is not "going fine."  What is the *exact* error message that you get?  I can't tell from your description whether ipodpatcher is running but generating an error, or not running at all.

Godeater- I'm using:

http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/ipod/ipodpatcher.exe

and

http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-ipod4gray.pdf

@ Febs

I am not home right now but will give you the exact error message in a few hours... basically, it seems to recognise the rest of the command but not the --scan or -a so it reads a normal response and a seperate error message at the end for --scan or -a

Thanks so much for your help by the way!

That is not the version of ipodpatcher that the manual tells you to download.  You need to download the version from here:

http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/ipod/ipodpatcher/

Choose the one appropriate for your operating system.

Hmm... well the wiki tells people to use the old installation instructions if they have a 3g, 4g, or mini.  (2nd note at the top of the IpodInstallationBeta page)

In that case, then, he needs to use the old ipodpatcher and also follow the old installation instructions.  He is trying to use the old ipodpatcher with commands that are supported only by the newer version.  The --scan command, for example, is only supported by the newer ipodpatcher, as far as I know.

That's right.

Sorry to use you as an example, but I have seen many such posts in the forums lately and it has gotten on my nerves.

Do not mimic a post that has been posted before unless the person just does not get it.
Do not confirm a previous post unless that person was unsure if they were right or not, or has asked for confirmation.

Doing either of these is a waste of space on the forums, creates more trash to wade through, and can be seen as "post count fluffing" among other issues.

Perhaps some incarnation these should be in the posting guidelines...

(Also, I am sorry if his un-edited post included something along the lines of the situations described above.  This just needed to be said.)

scorche, I understand your point completely.  Believe me I have no concern over post counts.  I will refrain from such posts in the future.

No your original advise worked... should I have used the older ipatcher instead? I am having some crashing issues but figured that it was just a normal bug... thanks again!
