I don't know... something between 100 and 1000...
The higher you set it, the better the quality, but the slower the playback and the bigger the resulting file!
I have no clue how big you screen is; on my nano (176:132) 160 kbit is more than enough (in my opinion).

I don't know how to encode other video formats into mpeg files for ipod nano. Can someone help?

Whats VLC? I have a nano and it for some reason wont play a five mb video thats mpeg. Do I edit it to a smaller screen size and fps and what not, and if so what do I edit it with?

Newgeekhere & Greenfear: VLC is Videolan Player (google for it). It's free, very powerful, can play and convert almost any video and everyone should have it! When you have it installed, use the convert.bat from the wiki or my prog from http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=8150.0 (it needs VLC).

thanx gnu, I have this converter, but I can't figure out which framerates work and which dont. has anyone tested to find out?

You've got a nano? For my nano I use 64 kbit for audio and 128 - 256 kbit for video (cartoons need lower bitrate).
