Builds w/User-Created Plugins?
« on: January 29, 2007, 07:49:56 PM »
When the next real current releases pop up, would they include user-created patches/plugins like Chopper or the brightness patch? If not, why? I have no idea on how to include the patches into a build, but I thought that you guys would include the brightness one and maybe a few more games into the real builds. Having a brightness function would make my battery last A LOT LONGER!!!!

Patches are applied to the source, then you have to compile the modified source to get the end result.

Thing is that there are a lot of patches found in the tracker that need to be refined before they make it up to SVN.
Other patches are just features that are not needed into the official builds and some are neglected due to lack of time from the developers side.

Eventually the good patches are included into SVN but since it is tiring and sometimes boring to correct and understand someone else's code many patches are left out.

Patches are applied to SVN if they have a reason to be there, do not contain bugs, and if they are done in an efficient and clean manner.  There really are no strict guidelines or timelines for if/when patches are accepted.  I do know that the brightness patch is very buggy and does not behave well with certain features (unofficial and official).

Also, just wanted to say that ALL patches/plugins are user-created.

And, to add something to the more games argument: Rockbox is about playing music. Not playing games. While game plugins are nice it's not the focus of the devs to increase the number of games in SVN and thus increase the number of plugins that need to get maintained. (Of course, if a dev likes a game plugin, wants to include it and does the required work to make it good enough for svn there isn't anything against it, but it simply isn't the main focus.)
