Bizarrely, it started working today.

I got the "system files missing" error instead of "USB connected". So I dumped the rockbox stuff on it, as per the instructions, and bingo - it's a rockbox!

Don't know what that was all about and it's probably some nasty intermittent fault that will come back to bite me, but until then I'm happy.
