Bricked ? Help! :(

(1/2) > >>

veghead:
I think I've bricked my H10 but I'm not sure and have no idea what to do about it. I was only given it yesterday too :(

During a firmware upgrade, something went wrong. Now I have a fully functional 6G USB mass storage device that does nothing else.
Turning it on immediately yields "USB Connected" regardless of whether a cable is plugged in. Plugging a cable in allows you to use it as a USB hard drive. Unplugging it produces the "Safe to disconnect" message. It can't be turned off using the power button, only by removing the battery.

Is it knacked ? Can it be fixed ? Is there a way to boot it properly ? I'd ideally like to run rockbox on it.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Veg

saratoga:
"Bricked" means it doesn't do anything.  Since yours mounts as a USB device, its not bricked.  You just need to put an OS on it.

It sounds like you just didn't follow the directions installing rockbox.  Have you tried starting over from the beginning, this time taking care to do each step correctly?

veghead:
OK bad use of slang. OTOH as far as it being an MP3 player is concerned, it is as useful as a brick.

In fact the problem wasn't caused by doing the rockbox installation but during a legit H10 firmware upgrade.

Yes, I have tried several times to do everything by the book wrt rockbox install. No go.

I've even tried running the iriver restore system and whilst it all appears to work (additionally evidenced by looking at the state of the drive after the upgrade), pulling the battery out and restarting makes no difference. As soon as it turns on, I get 'USB connected'. No 'initialising' screen or anything.

Any additional suggestions welcome.

saratoga:
If you followed the directions and it didn't work, I'd assume its broken.  Which seems reasonable if iRiver's own software will not work.  You should contact them for repair information.

veghead:
...sigh...yep - I thought as much.
Thanks for your response.

I was just curious as to whether anyone knew what was actually going on with it. Is the firmware borked ? Is there a way to force it to load new firmware ? Or is there some sort of hardware reset...

oh well..never mind.

Thanks again for your response.
