Re: Rockbox on different players
(1/1)

Hi:
I have a Toshiba Gigabeat 40 and installed Rockbox on the player as soon as I brought it home. I assume that Rockbox behaves differently on different players, Iriver, Ipod, Archos, Toshiba etc.
What are the common features and what features/plugins are player specific?
For me it's not the player, it's Rockbox. You can get a Gigabeat F40 on Ebay for less than $100 including shipping. As I recommend Rockbox, what are your thoughts on the advantages/disadvantages of using Rockbox on one player or another?
I look forward to reading responses as it will help me read the forum with greater understanding.
Thanks,
Tom

Rockbox is pretty much the same on all players. The main differences are the screen, buttons, and how mature the port is (new ports tend may not have some hardware features like radio or recording working yet).

I have an iHP-120, a Sansa e270, Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 v1, iPod Nano and a Gigabeat F40: The software is very very very very similar across all targets.
I find the button mapping is slightly different on a few of them. I'm going to attempt to document this and see if it's possibly to unify: I like the idea of someone sitting down at a new Rockbox, being able to press each button once, and then predict how the entire rest of the software will work because they knew what those buttons did on that screen on another player, plugins being the exception.
But yes, Rockbox is very consistent across targets.
