Contact viewer
« on: January 23, 2007, 06:33:12 PM »
Hello,
I've recently installed Rockbox on my iPod Nano and I'm very happy with the ogg playback. However, I deeply miss a contact viewer/manager and I don't want to boot into the Apple firmware every time I want to check a contact.
I know it's possible to compile Rockbox with the contact.c plugin [http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/4728]. In fact, I've tried to do so but 1) I can't find the sh-elf-gcc package for linux (all of those I've found have .exe extensions) and 2) the compiler doesn't seem support the iPod Nano (it isn't in the list of the readers that come out when I launch ./configure, they are all Archos devices).
I've also seen it's in the list of the next to be features [http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/182]. So, is it a contact reader/manager going to be added as a default plugin any time soon? Please, add it. It's the only thing preventing me to be 100% happy with Rockbox!

Try running the script that in the /tools directory.  This should set up a development environment, including the sh-elf-gcc package.

Sorry, I didn't get it. Which script do you mean? Something into the sh-elf-gcc package, something already in the /tools directory or the contact.c?

Thanks.

There's only one script in the /tools directory, rockboxdev.sh I believe its name is.

Although why you'd want sh-elf-gcc when compiling for a Nano is beyond me (sh-elf-gcc being for the archos players, not iPods) - surely arm-elf-gcc is what he's after?

Regardless, Llorean is correct, running ./rockboxdev.sh from the tools sub directory after you've downloaded the source tree will allow you to set up a full dev environment.

As to why I was looking for sh-elf-gcc I was actually following the instructions on the HowToCompile walkthrough (I'm no programmer). i didn't know I needed another package to compile it on my iPod.

I don't have time to try now but I'll definitely do in the next few days. I hope I can get my rockbox to work right.

Thanks so much for the support.

The rockboxdev.sh script will ask which platform you want cross-compilers installed for. If you're only after a compiler which will build correctly for the iPod, then you want arm-elf-gcc, not sh-elf-gcc.

It doesn't take long to kick the script off (30 seconds if you're a slow typer?) - but it will take a while to finish.
