Player reccomendation
« on: January 23, 2007, 05:10:56 PM »
I've been happily using Rockbox on my iPod 5.0g for about six months now, but my hard drive finally seems to be getting up the ghost.  Should I buy another one, or get another Rockbox compatible player?  I honestly have no special love for my shiny but generally flaky iPod.  Is there a general consensus on the best device available for Rockbox?  My only real needs are that it must be high density (hard drive based), and should preferably have an RTC so I can continue using the Audioscrobbler feature well.

At the moment the Gigabeats seem a fairly solid Rockbox targets for those requirements, and are somewhat easier to come by than a lot of the other targets. As well the iAudio X5 ought to do you good. Those are pretty much what you can expect to find available non-iPod.

Those both look like they do what I need - the Gigabeat generally looks like a pretty good player.  The port status pages seem to show the iPod being generally more stable and better tested, though.  Would I be better off buying another iPod 5G?

In my personal experience (I've only had the Gigabeat for 2 days now), the overall feeling is that the Gigabeat port is a solider port for the moment. Because it has a USB mode, you never have to leave Rockbox, and I *believe* the battery life is on average better, though I've not made a personal test yet.

As well, once Rockbox has solid video support, it will likely (but not definitely) be better on the Gigabeat, at least for quite some time.

That's reassuring to hear - I was also reading pretty generous battery estimates for the Gigabeat.  Video's not really an issue for me - I really only intend on using my player for music, but the bells and whistles certainly don't hurt :)

I would suggest to stay with the iPod but those other players are good too.
