What I would like to know is how can I truly know that mine is from the first generations of nanos. My nano is 2 GB, it is Black and I believe Chrome on the back. It is not the new "Remastered"  version of the Nano.

If you're still not sure, www.Apple.com/ipod and see if yours is the new Nano.

I believe there is no current release or stable releases of rock box for the nano, so should I download the SVN build? If so then should I download the latest or the oldest build? Is there anything else I should know that I might miss that is important?

Use the newest SVN build.  There area also custom builds with additional stuff enabled, but they're not always stable, and probably not the best idea if you're still figuring out how this works.
