Lots of annoying noob questions

(1/1)

PigMaster:
Hello everyone,
Well my 60gb iPod is in the mail, I bought it from eBay yesterday. Hoorah! So now I'm all excited about installing Rockbox, and I couldn't wait to post all my question with probably quite obvious answers. Ok, so here goes:

1) The Rockbox bootloader. Is it the best thing to use? Would the iPodLinux bootloader be better? I'd like to use the Apple firmware for music and video playing.

2) Is the 64MB memory patch applied to the daily builds? And if not, is having the extra memory necessary? Does it run things faster?

3) Are there any unsupported builds that I should try, or should I just stick to the daily builds?

4) Do any Gameboy games run at 100%?

5) That Wikipedia patch (well it's actually in the feature request area), has anyone tried that out? If anyone has, could they direct me to where to download the Wikipedia dump, and maybe they'd want to share their build with me in return for admiration and "props".

6) If you want to patch Rockbox, you have to compile the whole thing with the patch, and not just the patch itself, right?

7) Anything else I should know? (apart from reading the manual, I'll do that).

Thanks in advance for any help (flaming is welcome too).

soap:
1)  That is a subject of personal preference.  Try both and decide which one you like.

2a)  No, it is not applied to the daily builds.
2b)  Is the memory necessary?  No.  Rockbox runs just fine with only the 32 MB of the standard iPod Video build.
2c)  The memory does not allow things to run faster.  It provides more audio buffer.  This is not always a good thing, as filling a large buffer can waste battery filling the buffer with longer drive access if you are only listening to a few songs, or if you change playlists frequently.

3)  Nothing saddens me more than people fresh to Rockbox rushing out the unsupported builds - for three reasons.
Reason 1 is that they often never learn the ins and outs of Rockbox, and get confused over what is Rockbox and what is (insert unsupported build name here.)
Reason 2 is that they tend to expect support from the unsupported builds.  Be that support from the core Rockbox community, or be that support from the kind souls who offered the unsupported build as an act of kindness.
Reason 3 (the most important one) is that Rockbox (except on the Archos) is not a release-status project.  It is an actively developed project, in constant flux.  I'm having trouble expressing my thoughts, but Rockbox could really use more people ahh forget it

4)  There are sooo many Gameboy games, I have no idea what ROMs you have successfully copied from your carts.  Many don't run 100%, but are still playable.  Trying is the best test.

5)  Don't know.

6)  Correct.

7)  Read the manual.  Read the wiki.  Search the forums.  Then ask questions and you will be loved the world-round!   ;D

PS:
Oh!  If you read the documentation and still have a question be a good lad and report where the documentation was lacking so things can be better for the next person to stumble by!  Thanks!

PigMaster:
Thanks for that. I'll try out both of the bootloaders, unless I like the one I try first. I have quite a lot of ROMs I have copied from carts, so I'll mess about with that tonight, hopefully my iPod will come today.

So, has anyone tried the Wikipedia patch from the feature request?

Oh yeah, and it really sucks about the site getting hacked. Hope that 1337 h4x0r gets pwned.
