Yet another install issue
« on: January 17, 2007, 01:02:34 PM »
I have a 4GB 2nd gen iPod mini and installed rockbox using the instructions here: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodInstallation .
Everything seemed to go fine but when i reboot the iPod i get the rockbox loading screen then it goes to a picture of a USB cable then shuts down. This happens regardless of whether the iPod is connected to the USB cable or not. At first I thought this meant it needed charging, but i've charged it for a while and i can still play music fine when I start it with the original apple firmware.
Any thoughts?

Yes... you didn't read the text marked in red on the wiki page right below the heading. ;)

So to start over with the right set of instruction you might have to force your Ipod into disk mode (see here: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=8205.0 - especially the part about disk mode). Maybe you have to restore your Ipod with iTunes first but there is no mention of it in this quite similar thread.

I did read the text in red, I also read the text on the ipod installation beta page saying:

"NOTE: These instructions are known to have problems with the 1st and 2nd Generation Mini and 4G (Greyscale) ipods - Rockbox loads correctly, but the original Apple firmware will not start. Also, ipodpatcher does not yet work with the 3G (third generation) ipods. If you have one of these ipods, you should continue using the old installation instructions linked to from the iPodPort page."

As I have an iPod mini i used the old instructions as instructed. And I have just followed the beta instructions and i still have the same problem: The bootloader screen appears, then the rockbox logo, then a picture of a USB cable, then it shuts down. And now it won't load the original firmware.

There is a strange quirk in some iPods (we haven't determined what it is exactly). Once Rockbox is installed on them, they always think they're charging. In Rockbox this makes them reboot into disk mode. In the Apple OS this makes the battery charge icon always show that it's charging.

Right now, nobody knows the cause.

Guess i'll have to stick with the apple firmware for now then. I have noticed that it sometimes thinks its charging when it isn't. Oh well, thanks for the help anyway.
