The MAME license is not GPL compatible. I'm not sure where you've gotten there that it's under the GPL. It's under its own license.

yeah, strike my last. a friend sent me 2 .tar.tar files. i tried to compile them into a file (eg infoNES.rock) it tried to load but i got an incompatable player error message..so almost!

One more time, here's what Llorean is trying to tell you:

Whether or not you get it to compile it will not be able to be included in Rockbox because MAME is released under its own license, _not_ under GPL.
