rockbox error: -4 following update. ipod 4g grayscale

I tried to update rockbox  by downloading and extracting the .rockbox folder and rockbox.ipod file to the root of my ipod. Everything seemed to go OK however when i tried to reboot i received error: -4 and it rebooted into the original apple firmware.

I tried to copy the file/folder again but with the same problem so i tried to reload the old version which i was running before but this still gives the same error

I don't think i did anything stupid however it's always possible. Any help would be very much appreciated

do you have a recent bootloader? There was an incompatible change some weeks ago. I don't know if that gets displayed as error -4, but you may want to check it.

so how should i proceed? should i completely uninstall rockbox and reinstall?
