Problems with recent iPod Color/Photo Builds
« on: January 15, 2007, 06:54:42 AM »
As of 01/13/07, I have been unable to update my build of Rockbox for the iPod Color/Photo (20GB). The problem is that when I update the files, Rockbox will not load. There is no error, just the bootloading screen. I've tested 01/14/07 and 01/15/07 builds with full iPod restores with no luck. I've found that the 01/12/07 build works with no issues however, while 01/13/07 runs with a variety of quirks, such as a complete freeze when I 'Initiate Now' on the Database.

I'm simply wondering if others are experiencing similar difficulties, as I haven't seen any posts directly describing this. I have the correct bootloader and correctly installed Rockbox, but recent builds are failing for me. I have no particular rush for using the newer daily builds, and I really love this great OS, but I just wanted to throw it out there.

Thanks, Jake

That's the exact same thing that is happening to me. It only occurs with the newer builds, but hopefully 01/16/07 will have better results.

Yes, unless the bootloader has changed for the iPod in the past few days, for which I've ensured to download a new copy of the bootloader with every new install of the newer Rockbox builds. 01/12/07 works without any issues, so I suspect some bad builds over the past few days :(

Edit:
01/16/07 has the same results, with a prolonged hang on the boot screen. I know not if any of the other iPod builds are affected, but the iPod Color/Photo has been a bit buggy lately.

The iPod Photo has long been somewhat buggy. Have you tried compiling a build with frequency scaling disabled?

Mikeage compiles new builds almost daily that take care of the frequency scaling issue (or at least has it disabled).  Once I started using his builds, I haven't had a single crash on my 60gig photo since.  Go to this site:
http://mikeage.net/content/rockbox/index.php

and you'll want the color-noscaling.zip's for whatever daily build you want to install.  I honestly haven't updated my build since December 28th, but as I stated, I've never had an issue once I started using Mike's builds, and that was months ago.

I'll definitely take a look; I have used this version before, but it seemed odd to me that Rockbox would crash before it even loaded. I'll see if I have any better results and report back. Thanks!

Edit: It seems Frequency Scaling had been the issue; interesting, because it hadn't plagued me to such a degree with earlier builds, but it's good to know it is a cause for many of the issues. Thanks again.

I was having the exact same problem....the solution was to install a build from mikeage.com....More specifically, I'm using http://mikeage.net/content/rockbox/rockbox-20070107-color-cpufreq3.zip

This and questions like it should be asked in Mikeage's thread in the unsupported builds forum.
