OK, things went wrong. I enabled seeing the invisible files OK and I unzipped the ".rockbox" file to the 80G video iPod and also the fonts folder. I ran the patcher program and it apparently worked ok. So I followed the manual and used Disk Utility to unmount (not eject) the iPod. Then the iPod rebooted but never got to the splash screen. Instead it said no disk partition and to reboot and go into disk mode. I got into disk mode but what to do from there? The only way out I could see was to restore the iPod which seems to be working. But I really want Rockbox is this enough information to help me fix this and get it running?

Nope that utility does not work for me. I just tried it on my newly-restored iPod which was mounted on the desktop. Running it from the disk image or running it from my application folder and choosing complete installation all i get is an error message that "Mount Point Is Wrong." Huh?

And you selected the player model and mount point from the dialogue box?

I know this seems obvious, but we need to check.

Edit:  I've just reread your first post, and it seems that to have the reboot to disk mode message you must have got to the rockbox bootloader.  Could you post the exact, complete message?  Also, how is your disk formatted?  It needs to be FAT32.

Well, you need to choose two things:
1. the player itself
2. the mount point which describes where the player is accessible from the OS. On Windows this is the drive letter of the player, on linux the path where the player is mounted, hence the name. For the windows binary that naming could be improved.

Nevertheless, if your Ipod is in disc mode you should be able to auto-detect it by using the "Autodetect" button in the configuration dialog. You need to do this initially. Rockbox Utility currently doesn't warn about this (which is on the todo-list for getting improved).

Hi all,
I tried to install rockbox for my firt gen nano, so I can use the voice plugin, because i have a broken display and nothing shows on it. I guess i messed up the installation, cause i extracted files into Ipod_control file, not just into F:\ or whatever hard drive it is.

but with the bootloader it went all ok, i used also the voice file and after all the ipod turns on (the display shines) and nothing else happens, I can't read what's on the display, restarted it, nothing changed.

When I plug it back to the pc, nothing happens, ipod won't be recognized. display turns on, but but even with bootloader it says that ipod is not connected.

It there a way, how to get rockbox work, or at least unnistall it??

now the display started going on and off (lights up and stops) every 4 seconds when i plug it to the pc, but nothing else happens

Well the auto0detect did work for me. But then  I got the message I need to convert my MaciPod format to WinIpod. Anyway, I've decided not to proceed with this installation. I just don't have the confidence level in the install software to want to see what the next problem might be. No offense and I'll keep checking and when it appears that you have an install that is internally well-documented and that is working at near-consumer level I'll try it again. Thanks.

Be aware that Rockbox has no plans to support Mac's HFS+ file system, so regardless of whatever installation process is ultimately implemented, you will need to convert your iPod to a FAT32 filesystem (i.e., convert it from a MacPod to a WinPod) in order to install Rockbox.

I'm not quite sure what your issue with the documentation is - I think it's pretty good.

That aside, I thought I should mention that linuxstb is working on ipodpatcher so that it will do the change from HFS+ to FAT32 all in one place. Ultimately that will also mean it gets built into RockboxUtility, and will (hopefully) be a couple of mouseclicks for you. Hope that helps.

What I mean by "internally well-documented" is, for example, error messages which are verbose and intuitive rather than mysterious and counter-productive. When I got the brief error message about a "mount point" it would have made more sense for the error message to have read something like "Detection of Player Has Failed. Would You Like to Auto Detect? Yes/No." Then, why after detection did the software not automatically issue a "Warning: Player Must Be Formatted Win-Compatibile By iTunes" immediately and before the full install button was pressed resulting, this time, not even in a dialog box but a terminal-screen warning.

The documentation which comes with the RockBox utility is a pdf or html file (I used the html choice) which, as far as I can see, is documentation which predates the RockBox Utility and refers, instead, to software not on the RockBox Utility distribution disk image and software not needed when using the utility, i.e. ipodpatcher (in manual section 2.2.4). Why, instead, does not that section of the manual (generated, after all, by the RockBox Utility) reference the actual software being used and which, I assume, is at least one generation newer than ipodpatcher?

It is not my intention to argue with anyone here as I certainly appreciate many hundreds (thousands?) of people have installed this and are happy with it. I also know you are mostly all volunteers and don't need any problems here. The only reason I have explicated the above is because I was directly asked what I meant by my previous posting. I hope this explains how I feel a little bit better.

Error messages are small because we have many targets that simply would not have the room for a multi line message.  As well, having the .map addresses is simple and easy, as it would be silly for the device to have to look up the .map file every time it encountered an error.

Rockbox Utility is not ready to be made the official install process yet, which is why it is not included in the manual.  As well, the manual is updated every day with new information and is not something that we just update once in a long while.  You assume incorrectly about ipodpatcher being outdated as well.  If that was the case, we would not recommend using ipodpatcher.

We are not mostly all volunteers...we ALL are.

OK on ipodcatcher not being outdated. But my point is that if Rockbox Utility brings up or generates or includes a manual, that manual should concern itself with Rockbox Utility and not a different program entirely. Thanks.
