You didn't following the instructions thing from the manual thing.  Specifically, you didn't install the firmware thing like it says in section 2.2.3 of the manual thing.

Try using the Rockbox Utility: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome?topic=RockboxUtility

my ipod isn't reconised by the computer but it can charge its battery. it doesn't go to the menue any more all that you can see is the battery in the middle and the restart and disk mode don't work. thank you for mentioning those various helpful things :) but if my ipod can't be found by the computer then they can't work. but i assume the cord works because i used it right before the download to put all the files on it, and i was still able to charge it.

when i dowloaded the zip i use winrar. then i extracted it and pasted the whole thing. i'm sure the .exe was in there and i don't understand why it failed to find it in the first place. the only part of the manual i didn't do was the fonts. could that in ne way be the problem? reading another thread on here (30 gig ipod video ruined by ur program) the problem sounds very similar. i think that for some reason the bootloader could not find the .exe even though we followed the procedure correctly. but my ipod has died in the same stages as his so i think there is a serious bug that needs fixing before you can recommend the download.

and i can't see the battery symbol anymore. its pretty much just black.

now all i really want to do is return it for a new one but i'm afraid they will be able to find out that is was your program that did it and say i'm out of luck.

GodEater:
You keep referring to putting an "exe" on your ipod - which instructions did you follow which told you to do this ? There is nothing in our manual (that I'm aware of) which says to do this.

Reset and disk mode ALWAYS work. If you're not getting them - then you're not doing it right - it's as simple as that. No-one has ever killed their ipod using Rockbox software, it's simply not possible.

Also - we make people plainly aware that Rockbox is a work in progress. If someone is not confident in their own technical abilities, we advise not to install it. Sadly many people don't bother listening to that advice, and then end up in your situation.

Now - you say you think your cable is okay. It probably is - what it sounds to me like is that the USB port you have it plugged into isn't sending enough power down it to charge your ipod. If possible use a wall charger. If not - then change where you're plugging the cable into on your PC. *Don't* use a USB hub, a USB enabled monitor, or USB ports on your keyboard - plug the iPod straight into the PC.

i'm sorry but i remeber just after i got to the part where you remove the ipod a message appeared after the apple thing flashed and said that it could not locate rockbox.ipod (omg so sorry as u can tell my posts are at like one-five in the morning so ya AHH sorry) but i'm sure i pasted the file into the ipod after unzipping it with winrar) i kept trying to get it into disk mode but it just wouldn't work. i could reset it but then it just went back to normal. then i think the battery died and i let it charge. then all i could see was the battery. now its just black. it doesn't respond to anything. the computer can't find it. should i just get a new one. its not like i'm mad at you people i just want to know if you can help me or not. this was a risk from trying your program and w/e i take responsibility. is it dead?
if you can help then hurray.
if not w/e i learned my lesson.

bascule:
It just needs charging - possibly for a long time - and, as GodEater said from a decent power source.

There are a number of forum topics on the subject; here's just one:
