By the way i've noticed that in the instructions to put a 5.5 ipod into disk mode were kinda misleading. To do it properly you need to hold select and then play
i tried several times holding play then select and didn't get anywhere

The directions say to hold Play and Select, not to hold Play then Select.  Press both simultaneously.

It would help if you posted the exact error message you got - can you cut and paste from the command prompt window ?

Looks like there might be a problem with the disk in the iPod - have you dropped it at all ?

no I haven't dropped it at all, although it did freeze a few times when I was snowboarding, it was about -25 c, it never seemed to do any harm at the time when i warmed it back up it worked fine. it did however have a problem when uploading songs with itunes after this when i got home, it would get half way through updating and just stop? it is a few years old so maybe its just the ipod has packed up?

Yeah, I think being frozen and then unfrozen is probably not a good thing to have happen to your ipod - it may have affected the distance between the drive heads and the platter and caused some minor corruption on the disk. You could try using iTunes to do a restore on your iPod (make sure your music is backed up properly though) and see if that helps. Otherwise it sounds like you may need a new hard drive for your iPod.

OK, after carefully reading the installation instructions for RB on my 1gen ipod nano, all it did was go into the apple logo and stay there for 5 min.

I managed to totally undo everything and afer carefully reading the instructions once more, i noticed that the folder that was supposed to be in the ipod root is .rockbox.

I put the folder back into the ipod and windows refuses to name the folder .rockbox and correcting it back to rockbox without the period.

WTF is wrong with my computer and how do i get around it?

Windows explorer won't let you name something that starts with a '.' character.

You shouldn't *have* to rename it though if you used one of the recommended unzip tools since they extract it to that name for you.

If you're using some dreadful tool which is renaming it to something else though, the best way to get it back to ".rockbox" is to use the command prompt. (See the first post in this thread for a guide on how to use it if you're not familiar with it).

I used WinZip for this case, but  might  try WinRar, which i trust more.

when i did uncompress it with winzip, it got named rockbox without the period all by itself.

HAH! WinRar worked, It named the folder .rockbox :D

Please put WinRar as a recommended filed decompresser in your installation guide

Winrar is proprietary and non-free.  7zip on the other hand (which is recommended IIRC), is open source and free.  As both will correctly unzip the file, I strongly suspect that 7zip will remain the recommended tool, and not winrar.

Plus, 7zip is also available as command line client for linux (not sure about Mac OS).

We have a recommended tool, why do we need another? This is open source, not closed source advertising ;)
