Good evening, guys and girls.

I just tried installing Rockbox using the utility on my iPod 5th Gen (512 byte-sectors). Everything seemed to go fine, but I get the "cannot load rockbox.ipod" error on starting the iPod. I'm using a Mac, so I double checked to make sure there's a .rockbox folder in the root of the iPod. There is. I deleted it, downloaded a new build, extracted it, and used cp -fv to move the .rockbox folder to my ipod. It worked, but I still get the error.

rockbox.ipod can be found in /.rockbox/ off the iPod root.

Advice?

Any ideas?

Why not try manual?
Extract it, stick it into the root, then if you want, run ipodpatcher to make it so that rockbox boots by default

I installed Rockbox yesterday and now my iPod won't come on:

Most likely you ran down the battery. Let the thing charge for 4-5 hours and then try to turn it back on.

What if the ipod does not turn back on, even when plugged into the computer, is this normal?  I just recharged my ipod and it had full batteries, I think, but I just installed it.

Edit:

Also my ipod does not appear on the removable hardware list.

My ipod is nano, first generation 2gig white.

Doom and something else does no work for the plugins btw  ;)

I have modified your post to remove the annoying colours. - BigBambi

ipod 5g in a boot 'loop', never gets recognized
« Reply #137 on: January 14, 2008, 01:48:19 PM »
not content with installing the world's best software alongside the original OS on my 30GB 5G Video, where it ran pretty much flawlessly, I decided to tweak up the _original_ OS with iPodwizard 1.3. Installed Classic for Video per instruction, restarted per instruction, and my baby starts the boot loop of death:

1) dim logo
2) bright logo
3) screen goes blank as disk spins down

repeat until battery is exhausted.

the boot is not going far enough to be recognized by the computer or (I think) understand what disk mode is so it can go into it (or at least it has resisted all my efforts to get it to do so). I was successful in getting it into diagnostic mode, and it passes all the tests. is there a way to have itunes recognize the ipod while in diagnostic mode so I can do a restore? or, alternatively, get it to boot the rest of the way into rockbox? or, alternatively, have the unit ignore all the OS and function as a drive so I can restore the original firmware backup?

I know this is my own fault and technically has nothing to do w RB, but I know that a lot of RB'ers use or have tried iPW. Have also posted there, but I have more faith in the RB knowledge base and hive mind...
Thanks

If you've got the button timing down for getting into diagnostics mode, I'm surprised you're struggling with the disk mode - you need to do the button pushes for it at the same time as you've been doing the diagnostics ones. Keep trying.

well, that's encouraging I guess! only stumbled across diagnostic mode in a wide ranging search - went in right away. meanwhile, have blisters on my thumbs from trying for disk mode. will persevere.

the loop of death continues
« Reply #140 on: January 15, 2008, 10:17:24 AM »
ok, after another frustrating few hours...diagnostic mode works, disk mode just doesn't. is there anything _I_ can do - I am reluctant to crack it open, but if I need to get at the hard drive directly to effect repairs, I expect I will have to.

it seems weird - I thought the apple bootloader was in flash memory and not subject to rewriting, which would imply that I could in fact do _something_ to stop the loop so the computer could recognize and I could try to fix. :-[

Rockbox Error -1: or Can't load rockbox.ipod:File not found
You didn't read the manual properly.
Use winzip, or some other "unzip" program to extract the .zip file you downloaded from rockbox.org to your iPod. If your iPod connects to your PC as the "F:" drive, then unzip the file into "F:\"

Scince im rlly not good at any of this ad this is the problem i got i was hoping that you could dumb down ur solution a bit cuz im complelty lost

Please note that our forum guidelines require you to use proper English.  We do not permit slang like "rlly" or "cuz."

The instructions that you quoted in the first part of your post are fairly self-explanatory.  If you're having trouble following them, then I would recommend that you instead try using the Rockbox Utility:

apparently i unzipped the  ".rockbox" in wrong place, but now w/ that knowledge, the ipod wont show up on the computer when i plug it in. (if any help, windows xp and 1st gen nano) i cant even get the ipod to go to the regular firmware again (i tried the select+play thing, did not work). I read the Faq, but all it said was to do the select+play.  i will admit that i am retarded at this sort of thing, and i dont care if you make me a laughing stock. i dont know you. feel free to use strong language to get to the point and tell me where i screwed up.

Flick the "hold" switch on and then off again.  Then hold select+menu.  This will reboot into the Apple firmware.

If the Apple firmware isn't working for some reason, repeat the above, but when the Apple logo comes up, hold select+play.  This will take you to the emergency disk mode.

Note that you may have to hold these buttons down for more than a minute to see the effect, though it's typically a couple of seconds.

Hey, I have a nano and I've extracted .rockbox folder onto my ipod and i've also downloaded ipodpatcher as I'm trying to use the bootloader..

when i run ipodpatcher it just keeps saying the "no ipods found, aborting"

my ipod is clearly attached and is in disc mode and I can move files onto it, but it is not recognized by ipodpatcher

can anyone help me out with this?

I'm having the same problem, does anyone knows what could be happening?

thx
