ok, after another frustrating few hours...diagnostic mode works, disk mode just doesn't. is there anything _I_ can do - I am reluctant to crack it open, but if I need to get at the hard drive directly to effect repairs, I expect I will have to.
it seems weird - I thought the apple bootloader was in flash memory and not subject to rewriting, which would imply that I could in fact do _something_ to stop the loop so the computer could recognize and I could try to fix. :-[

You didn't read the manual properly.
Use winzip, or some other "unzip" program to extract the .zip file you downloaded from rockbox.org to your iPod. If your iPod connects to your PC as the "F:" drive, then unzip the file into "F:\"
Scince im rlly not good at any of this ad this is the problem i got i was hoping that you could dumb down ur solution a bit cuz im complelty lost

The instructions that you quoted in the first part of your post are fairly self-explanatory. If you're having trouble following them, then I would recommend that you instead try using the Rockbox Utility:

apparently i unzipped the  ".rockbox" in wrong place, but now w/ that knowledge, the ipod wont show up on the computer when i plug it in. (if any help, windows xp and 1st gen nano) i cant even get the ipod to go to the regular firmware again (i tried the select+play thing, did not work). I read the Faq, but all it said was to do the select+play. i will admit that i am retarded at this sort of thing, and i dont care if you make me a laughing stock. i dont know you. feel free to use strong language to get to the point and tell me where i screwed up.
