Did you try it with the "hold switch to on, hold switch to off" sequence beforehand ?

Hi,

I installed Rockbox this evening, and my 3G iPod is stuck in a cycle whereby it starts the hard drive, shows the apple logo, then the Rockbox logo, then the Rockbox menu (so far, so good, I'm guessing), then it says "shutting down", then restarts, and so on...

Any ideas what I need to do?

It sounds like you might have a hardware problem.  What happens if you switch the Hold switch on?

then it says "shutting down"
Does it mention a low battery?

I'm asking because I remember at least 3 people reporting similar issues on 3rd generation Ipods with current Rockbox builds but always mentioned getting the low battery warning splash before. The only currently available developer with this type of Ipod seems to be looking into it already but does not have a solution yet.

If that is what's happening for you, you could try older builds - unfortunately I'm not aware of the date or commit that broke it...

Hello. I have recently attempted to install rockbox on my 30 GB iPOD Video. The install itself seemed to go smoothly, but when I tried to start up mu ipod, I was greeted with the message: "Connect to you computer. Use itunes to restore." Beneath it there was text in several other languages which I presume to be translations of the above message. I am at a complete loss; I can not get the ipod to function. What should I do? Thanks in advance for any help that may be provided.

I see that there was a commit today:

Disable low battery shutdown for the time being on iPod 3g until the battery reading strangeness is fixed.

concrete: See if this fixes the repetitive shutdown problem.  Although I still don't really see why the target should restart automatically.

It connected to my computer normally. It mounted to the right place, and I was able to transfer songs to it. I am unable to use iTunes to "restore" it, though, as apple has yet to see fit to release itunes for linux.

You don't need iTunes to restore it - we have a page in our wiki telling you how to do it from linux, the beauty of which is it leaves your music partition alone (unlike when iTunes does it, which wipes your entire music collection).

Good evening, guys and girls.

I just tried installing Rockbox using the utility on my iPod 5th Gen (512 byte-sectors). Everything seemed to go fine, but I get the "cannot load rockbox.ipod" error on starting the iPod. I'm using a Mac, so I double checked to make sure there's a .rockbox folder in the root of the iPod. There is. I deleted it, downloaded a new build, extracted it, and used cp -fv to move the .rockbox folder to my ipod. It worked, but I still get the error.

rockbox.ipod can be found in /.rockbox/ off the iPod root.

Advice?
