60gig ipod with Mac
« on: January 14, 2007, 03:35:13 PM »
tring to install for the first time.  my iPod was formatted with an incompatible format so i ran these commands in the Terminal:

------------------
popstar:~/desktop usershortname$ dd if=mbr-video60gb.bin of=/dev/disk2s3
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
512 bytes transferred in 0.322858 secs (1586 bytes/sec)
popstar:~/desktop usershortname $ newfs_msdos -F32 -v iPod /dev/disk2s3
newfs_msdos: warning: /dev/disk2s3 is not a character device
/dev/disk2s3: 116984960 sectors in 1827890 FAT32 clusters (32768 bytes/cluster)

popstar:~/desktop usershortname $ ./ipodpatcher /dev/disk2s3 -r bootpartition.bin
ipodpatcher v0.5 - (C) Dave Chapman 2006

[INFO] Reading partition table from /dev/disk2s3
[INFO] Sector size is 512 bytes
[ERR]  Drive is not an iPod, aborting
-----------------------------

i did this once, then opened iTunes and let iTunes reformat the iPod...  apparently this wasn't what i should have done because the i was getting the same error when trying to backup the firmware.

now that my ipod is formatted correctly, and i'm using a mac, what do i do next?

i had a half dozen web pages open but my browser crashed and i forget where i was within the help section.  :(

thanks,
chris

If you run "ipodpatcher --scan" it'll give you the right device name. I suspect /dev/disk2s3 is probably a partition, and not the whole ipod device.

thanks for your response.   i don't think that's the problem.

i first got this error when trying to backup:

Bad boot sector signature

then via the forums discovered that i needed to reformat my ipod with the windows format.  that's when i got the next error...

Yes, because disk2s3 is not an iPod. GodEater is correct, that is not the whole device, just a partition.
