PC will not recognize x5 as USB mass storage since Rockbox installed
« on: January 14, 2007, 05:19:16 AM »
Hi all,

Ever since I've installed Rockbox on my cowon X5L, my PC will not recognize it as an extrenal drive (which means that no modification can be made to the cowon including changing the firmware!).

However I could still start the player and use it normally until.... I tried to remove rockbox as described in the manual (removed the rockbox.iaudio file).

Now, the player will not start at all: the bootloader displays a quick error  message and then stops the player. The same happens when I plug the USB cable into it.

Help!!

Ok I take that back.

I've just realized that there are actually two USB ports on the Cowon:

I was trying to connect it through the USB HOST port and not the main one situated at the bottom and called "connector" in the manual (i.e through the cradle and/or subpack).

Now that I connected it the PC to the main connector I can again access the drive. *sigh of relief*

Now everything works fine again  ;D ;D ;D

As you say, you only removed the rockbox.iaudio file so the rockbox bootloader is still installed and is trying to read that file on boot.
Reflash your x5l with cowons orignal firmware and you'll have a stock x5l again.
Oh, wait. Did you remove the rockbox.iaudio from within rockbox? Hmm... That's not going to help you at all.
Ok, then we HAVE to solve your connection problem;

How do you do when  you connect your x5l to your computer? Is it started and running rockbox?
I've got an x5 too, albeit not an x5l and i don't have any issues hooking it up to my computer.
I almost always connect my x5 from turned off (computer turned on) and that means that no rockbox code is ever executed.
It's got two modes when connected via usb like that, either disk mode or 'charge mode' toggled by a long 'press' on power.
Oh, by the way: You are not using the usb-port on the side are you? You have to use the usb-port on the mini-dock.

It's a very common error for people to confuse the two USB ports on the X5. Cowon did a poor job labeling the USB OTG port, 'USB Host' is sort of vague to most non-technical people.

Indeed but i never even thought of trying to connect that port to my computer, i bet it even says "use the minidock when connection your x5 to your computer".
