The link on the rockbox site is broken.  Please help me out if you can.

try the link here:

ftp.netcava.net/all_files/rockbox

you can use these instead of rombox / bootbox (which doesn't allow the use of the database i believe) & flash as in the wiki instructions.

The current information on flashing for the Archos is at http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/BootBox

Ignore the references to this being a pre-release.

These are the original flashing files which leave even *less* room in the ROM for Rockbox.

Use http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/BootBox which leaves the most space for flashing Rockbox.

There is nothing in the use of Rombox that would prevent someone from using Database.  The issue is that, currently, Rombox is simply too big on the Recorders.  Something must be removed to shrink the size into something that is small enough to fit in the ROM.  Database just happens to be something that I decided to get rid of to make my personal Rombox builds work.  Then I committed the work so others can do the same.  However, if you want to keep Database, you can still use an older build that was still small enough for Rombox. (assuming that it isn't too old as to not have Tagcache, as it was called a while back)

is it not possible to use the bin files i suggested & not flash with rombox? just flash in the normal way i've been doing for years?

that way the user would retain all functions of rockbox.

obviously you wouldn't have the 4% battery advantage then.
