How do you do screendumps?

Hey all, I didnt realyl know where to post this, but I was wondering if and how to perform screenshots in rockbox, and I am using a 30GB iPOd Photo, thanks for any answers!  :)

It's probably not in the manual, actually, since it's in the debug menu.

The debug menu isn't described in the manual (intentionally) except saying the average user should keep out. So the screendump option is not documented in the manual.
Another option would be to use the simulator ... rasher has prebuild binaries for windows. Look for the UiSimulator wiki page.

I am not really sure why screendump is 'hidden' in the Debug menu, wouldn't it be good to move that option to somewhere more accessible, and then it could be documented for anyone to use...

The screendump option is hidden because it disables usb (as it uses a usb connection to detect the screenshot "event"). That way it would be prone to errors and lots of users coming up, "my usb isn't working". So it's better to have this inside of the debug menu, people who use it will (hopefully) know what they are doing.

one odd thing that I noticed is that the USB cable has to be plugged in for this to work, is that because screenshots are triggered by the actual data transfeer aspect of the insertion or just the insertion itself?

They are thriggered by insertion, but the insertion will not trigger unless your cable is connected to something providing power over the USB cable.
