Because you skipped instructions during the install. Probably the entirety of section 2.2.2, skipping ahead to the bootloader installation instead of reading the whole thing.

It also tells you what to do after downloading it. Either you didn't do that, or you did it wrong, because rockbox.ipod is not in the root of your device.

What are you doing, exactly? What did you do with the daily build?

You didn't unzip properly then. When you unzip it properly, it should create rockbox.ipod and the .rockbox folder in the root of your device, as that's what rockbox.zip contains.

Are you kidding?

Here's what the directions in the Rockbox Manual say:

Quote
Use the “Extract all” command of your unzip program to extract the files in the .zip file onto your player. Note that the entire contents of the .zip file should be extracted directly to the root of your player’s drive. Do not try to create a separate directory or folder on your player for the Rockbox files! The .zip file already contains the internal directory structure that Rockbox needs.

Note: If the contents of the .zip file are extracted correctly, you will have a file called rockbox.ipod in the main folder of your player’s drive, and also a folder called /.rockbox, which contains a number of other folders and system files needed by Rockbox. If you receive a “-1” error when you start Rockbox, you have not extracted the contents of the .zip file to the proper location.

I don't see how we could make it any clearer.

The root of the ipod.

So if your ipod appears as F:

You need to unzip to F:\
