Need Help W/ Video ipod Bootloader Installation.ipodpatcher wont read bootloader

Alright, I'm almost done installing Rockbox on my video ipod (I have the device number, backed up original firmware, extracted files, ect.). However, When I go to install the bootloader, Command prompt (I use a Windows XP) tells me that it cant read my bootloader and that it failed. I KNOW I'm putting in the right code:

C:\rockbox\ipodpatcher 1 -a bootloader-ipodvideo.ipod

It started to install the bootloader, but then it said that it couldn't be read. If anyone has any advice, please say somthing. I'm completely stuck

If you type "dir" (without the quotes) at the command line, does bootloader-ipodvideo.ipod appear in the list of files?

If so, what is the exact error message ipodpatcher is displaying?

  It starts to install the bootloader (Identifying my ipod video, showing amount of space bootloader uses, ect.). However, it just says that it can't be read, then that installing the bootloader failed.

By the way, can you be a little more specific on the "dir'' thing you mentioned. I'm not good with command prompt, or with guessing code.

You still haven't given me the exact error message.  Using words like "it" doesn't help either...

By typing "dir", I mean literally that - press D, then I, then R, then ENTER.

I'm guessing you are not running ipodpatcher from the same directory as you saved the bootloader-ipodvideo.ipod file in.  You need to follow the instructions precisely.

1st: I'm not on my computer. I'm using my school's computer during free time in my extra cirricular. That's why I cant say EXACTLY what the error said.

2ond: If ipodpatcher is in the wrong directory, how could I back up the firmware, and find the device number of my ipod.

3rd: When I'm asking what you ment by dir, I ment code that I can use in command prompt.

Can anyone help me out please? the problem is the bootloader

The problem is not necessarily the bootloader.

Many people either put ipodpatcher someplace included in the path, or type the full path to ipodpatcher which means you can run it from anywhere, even if it's not in your folder.

You have to not only HAVE ipodpatcher in the same place as the .ipod file, but you have to BE there too, you can't just type C:\Rockbox\ipodpatcher, instead, CD C:\Rockbox, and type ipodpatcher (and all the other stuff past it) on its own.

Wait, Does The bootloader need to be in the same folder as ipodpatcher? 'cause that's how I did it before, and command prompt says that the bootloader can't be read, and that installation failed.

Is the CD part of the code? like, is CD C:\rockbox\ipodpatcher 1 -r bootloader-ipodvideo.ipod

It's not "code".
They're commands. It's the command prompt.
Type:
cd c:\rockbox

On its own.
Then you follow the instructions once you're there. EXACTLY as the installation instructions say. They even tell you to cd to the c:\rockbox folder. If you follow them EXACTLY instead of skipping over steps you either don't think you need or don't understand, it will work.

Also, you do NOT -r bootloader-ipodvideo.ipod. There is NEVER an instruction to do that.

Typos when attempting the install can result in an iPod that needs to be restored. Be more careful, as a restoration wipes all the data on the disk.

 Ok I tried that command you gave me. nothing happened...
I'll put down what I typed to see if I did anything wrong:
cd C:\rockbox

Please help. I still can't figure out why the bootloader won't work. By the way, I read the error I got (Because the previous posts I made were at school).
here it is:
[ERR] Couldn't open input file bootloader-ipodvideo.ipod
[ERR] --add bootloader failed

is bootloader-ipodvideo.ipod in the Rockbox folder on your C drive?

i'm havin the same problem but with the nano and yes for me at least both files are in the same folder c:\rockbox\
 

so i am pretty much confused cause i did the installation exactly how it said but it gives me this error

[err] Couldn't open input file bootloader-ipodnano.ipod
[err] --add-bootloader failed

so idk how to fix it cause the manual doesn't say how any where

What is the exact command you are typing in order to run ipodpatcher?
