iAudio X5L 20 gig: Broken HDD
« on: January 09, 2007, 03:56:37 PM »
I'm going to replace my HDD with an identical one here.

Anybody have a guide? Do I need to do anything software side for it to work? My X5 had rockbox dual-boot before its HDD failed. Power switch=rockbox. REC+Power=iAudio firmware.

Is there any soldering involved? What tools do I need?

EDIT: BTW, it says ATA Error: -32 when I boot and it says HDD error when I boot into iAudio firmware. I can hear the disk spin up, but it sounds like the head isn't in the right position: a "kerclunk sound keeps repeating".

No soldering, you'll only need a small screwdriver to remove 6 screws in order to access it properly.

Don't you mean 4 screws? I might have lost screws. I'm not sure...

Four to open the player, but IIRC you'll need to remove two more screws (black, near the top) in order to remove a small daughter board. I don't think you'll be able to remove the HDD if you don't remove this, but I'm not 100% certain. It should be pretty obvious; the HDD is connected with a pin header on a ribbon cable.

I didn't have to remove any daughterboard. If you had trouble removing the HDD, it was because you had to unplug the HDD (duh!) and slide it slightly out of the bottom metal thing.
