ipod dock connector
« on: January 09, 2007, 09:29:47 AM »
Hi,

Are there any plans to incorporate a plugging/driver/other for the ipod dock connector I have had a look in flyspray but cant find a feature request.

I have also looked through the forums an not really found any information however the search function is not working at present so I may well have missed it.

Blake

PS sorry about the spelling and grammar

Search is working fine for me, and has been for a while now.

What do you mean by "driver" for the dock connector? The connector itself is a variety of things, such as line in, line out, serial, and USB. Those work to varying degrees.

Hi there,

You are right the search is now working however when I tried this morning it did not work. Sorry I should have tried first.

Ok as I understand it the dock connector on an ipod can also be used by peripheral devices to communicate with the ipod amongst other purposes. i.e. I have a dock that has a remote that can be used to control the ipod while the ipod is docked. I think that this use the serial part of the dock but I don’t honestly know. There are also FM transmitters that transmit the track id3 tag info by RDS

Are there plans to cover this type of functionality? i.e. possibly a serial communication driver for ipods?

I will try to be more explicit in what I am asking in the future.

The plan is always to implement all of the hardware of the device. With the iPod there are many hurdles in the form of the proprietary hardware in it.

That being said, developers would need to figure out how to send and receive data on the serial port, and also the protocol that accessories use to communicate. So there are two steps to the process, and neither is particularly simple.

While many people want this functionality, it hasn't really been started on much outside of what has already been done by the iPodLinux project. It's not of a core focus (there are still many things to be ironed out just in the stuff Rockbox already does on iPod, or needs to do to catch up to the other ports) and those people who are actually interested in it tend to land in the category of people who can't do it.

I meant the universal dock, which does use the dock connector, so some peripherals do work.

As I said, You completely missed the whole point of the thread.

This thread is about using various accessories with the iPod, which uses a protocol that we do not know much about.

The line out is correlated to a specific pin on the dock, and as such, does not have any need at all to use the protocol or the serial port.

The universal dock is an accessory for the iPod.

I don't know about future plans, but this is the standard reply in regard to accessories working right now:
